The Alice Springs Turf Club will be the centre of attention in the Northern Territory on Saturday when it hosts a competitive four-race meeting at Pioneer Park. There has been no rain in the Red Centre since January 13 and although it will be partly cloudy on Friday the dry weather should continue with only a 30 per cent chance of precipitation. However, a possible shower or two has been forecast for Saturday – in fact there’s a 70 per cent of rain. Not enough though to affect the dirt track where a good surface and a top temperature of 34C awaits horses, jockeys, trainers, owners and patrons.
Best Bet at Alice Springs: Fair Go
Fair Go was aiming for three straight wins last weekend and looked a real show when leading for most of the race before being overtaking in the home straight to finish second over 1100m (0-58). Lumping 60kg, the son of Anacheeva was spotting the winner Real Devine a hefty 5kg and was by no means disgraced, going down by a length. Prior to that Fair Go had made it back to back wins over 1400m (BM54) and 1600m (0-64) in December. The former Victorian galloper is clearly in good form and although Pembroke Castle and Hard Work Rewards should provide decent competition, he should prove far too good, especially over the much preferred distance of 1400m.

Next Best at Alice Springs: Lethal Encounter
Got the money in sensational fashion last start over 1400m (Class 2) on December 18. The 5YO gelding stood in the gates and was a clear last, but once entering the back straight he had made up considerable ground despite sitting well back in eighth place in the 10-horse field at the 1000m mark. With 600m to go, the son of Squamosa was easily spotting the leaders eight lengths and was seemingly no chance. However, Lethal Encounter was on the move and once turning for home he stormed home to grab the leader on the line to win by half a head. The former Victorian charger hasn’t done much wrong in eight starts in the Alice and Kununurra missing a place on two occasions.

Best Value at Alice Springs: Real Devine
Real Devine sat behind the leaders in fourth place last weekend over 1100m (0-58) and looked a million dollars before rounding the leaders once turning for home to post an impressive win over Fair Go and City Jet. Was quoted at $10 earlier in the week with online betting sites, but recent form suggests that the four-year-old mare is bound to receive plenty support and will surely start at a much shorter price on race day. The daughter of Real Saga failed to run a place in her first eight starts in the NT after arriving from Queensland, but a win at Kununurra last September clicked her into gear and she has been placed twice in her past three starts at Pioneer Park. Will carry an extra 3kg this week, but last week’s effort was full of conviction.

Race 2 – #5 Real Devine (6)
