There’s only four races on Saturday with owners and trainers resting their runners for the forthcoming Alice Springs Cup Carnival. Up to 31 runners had accepted up until Thursday, but it still won’t be an easy task for punters to find four winners with any comfort or confidence. The main race is a $21,525 Benchmark 76 over 1200m with ageless marvel Roughly, who will more than likely be favourite, lining up for her 63rd career start.
Still no rain in Alice Springs since February 5 (0.4mm) with mostly sunny conditions and a five per cent chance of rain on Friday and partly cloudy conditions and a 10 per cent chance of rain on Saturday. If anything, it might be a little breezy on Saturday with a top temperature of 35C. A good dirt surface will be the order of the day with the rail in the true position.
Best Bet at Alice Springs: Unpredicted
Unpredicted produced an outstanding last start performance on February 11 with success over 1100m (BM54). Jumping from the outside gate in a 10-horse field, Unpredicted lumped 61kg and for the first 300m sat four wide before sitting three wide and taking over as the leader by two lengths with 600m to go. The six-year-old gelding had every reason to run out of puff, but held on to overcome the fast-finishing Freedom Day (54.5kg) by 0.8 lengths. The form certainly stacks up as Freedom Day returned last Saturday to seal a debut win at Pioneer Park over 1000m (BM54). Unpredicted, the son of Rubick, has pace to burn and will appreciate the drop in weight and a better gate despite stepping up in class. The former NSW galloper takes on decent opposition, but his victory a fortnight ago was full of merit.

Next Best at Alice Springs: Roughly
The bonny 10-year-old mare Roughly might be having her 18th start since May 29 after returning from a 20-month hiatus in the paddock, but the daughter of Kaphero is showing no signs of slowing down. Roughly has also been carrying the big weights – not surprising as she has a rating of 94 – and she backs up after finishing fourth with 62.5kg on her back against some very speedy types over 1000m at an open level last Saturday. That was the first time the mare had not ran a place in a 11 starts and considering the field is not as strong this weekend she is capable of bouncing back. In her past 15 starts, Roughly has saluted on seven occasions from 1100-1600m and has only missed finishing in the top three twice. She will be spotting her rivals 4kg, but her consistency is just too hard to ignore.

Best Value at Alice Springs: The Last Charge
Every likelihood it will be a wide betting race as there are many chances. No denying the fact that last start winner Nordic Lass, who overcame The Last Charge two weeks ago, can go back to back. New arrivals Envenomate and Variara have the pedigree to win first up at Pioneer Park, while Debbonaire Boy and Manhattan Man are in the mix. The Last Charge managed a fourth on his Red Centre debut over 1200m (Class 2) in late November before a seventh over 1100m (0-58) on December 18 and a sixth over 1000m (BM54) on January 21. The five-year-old gelding then stepped back up to 1200m (Class 2) on January 28 finishing second behind the in-form Lethal Encounter with Nordic Lass third. The son of Late Charge wasn’t far away on February 11 over 1200m (0-58) and is poised to pounce.
