The three-year-olds take centre stage on Day 2 of the Alice Springs Cup Carnival with the $50,000 NT Guineas (1600m) on Saturday afternoon. In one of the best ever meetings in years outside Pioneer Sprint Day and Alice Springs Cup Day, a total of 76 horses have accepted for the eight-event program.
After relentless 40C heat throughout summer, light rain fell in the Red Centre on Thursday, and further showers are tipped on Saturday with a top temperature of 35C.
It will be a good dirt surface and the rail will once again be in the true position.
NT Guineas tip: Grinzinger Lass
Grinzinger Lass, who has a 2kg advantage on Saturday, has impressed in the Red Centre. Sharing the lead on debut against fellow three-year-olds over 1200m on February 25, the filly looked home before being pipped on the line. Settling fourth over 1400m on March 8, the daughter of Shalaa made ground on the leaders along the fence at the 500m before bursting clear at the 100m to win by 2.5 lengths. Grinzinger Lass finished strongly to suggest that stepping up to 1600m may not be an issue.

Best Bet at Alice Springs: Dakota Lee
Eyeing the $100,000 Pioneer Sprint (1200m) on April 5, Dakota Lee makes her long-awaited return after a comfortable last start win over 1100m at BM76 level on June 30. That followed victory over 1000m in open company on Alice Springs Cup Day on April 7 before breaking the track record (1.07.85) after saluting by 3.5 lengths in an open 1200m handicap on June 16. The six-year-old mare by Kuroshio is unbeaten in 10 Pioneer Park starts and certainly has the speed to nullify a wide gate.

Iknowhatyouredoing was fifth in a BM76 over 1400m on March 1 after blowing the start and is worthy of another chance after winning two of his previous three starts in Darwin. That was during the Darwin Cup Carnival last July-August; however, the five-year-old gelding thumped his rivals over 1600m and 2050m. The son of Husson, third in the 2023 Darwin Guineas (1600m), boasts a win and a second over 1600m at Morphettville as a three-year-old. A 2kg claim also enhances his hopes on Saturday.
