After a two-week break, it’s full steam ahead for the Alice Springs Turf Club as its gears up for its annual Cup Carnival starting April 8. There will be racing every weekend in the Red Centre from now until April 30, with Pioneer Park hosting nine meetings.
Up to 61 acceptors will feature on Saturday in what shapes as a terrific seven-race card. Since 0.4mm fell in the Red Centre on February 5, it has only rained on one other occasion – that was last Saturday, when 0.6mm was recorded. Apart from sunny conditions and a top temperature of 36C on Saturday, a 15-25km/h south-easterly is predicted to arrive once the racing gets underway. A good dirt surface awaits, with the rail in the true position.
Best Bet: Miracoli
This five-year-old gelding is aiming for his third-straight win despite stepping up in grade. He had his first win in an 1100m maiden in his Red Centre debut in April 2021, which was also his first start. Making his eighth appearance over 1100m (0-58) on January 21, the son of Pierro was fourth before backing up a week later to topple Fair Go over 1400m (0-58). Fair Go (60kg) and Miracoli (55kg) dominated the race before the latter kicked away with 100m to go to win by a length. On February 18, Miracoli (56.5kg) settled in fourth place before bursting clear in the home straight to seal victory over 1400m (0-58) by 3.8 lengths from Mi Mojo. He takes on Fair Go and Mi Mijo again on Saturday and they all share a similar weight, but Miracoli clearly had plenty left in the tank last start as he won effortlessly.

Next Best: Roughly
Bench Press would have provided a solid test, but he is set to be scratched, thus enhancing Roughly’s prospects. Dismiss any opposition at your peril, but given the way this daughter of Kaphero trounced her rivals by 4.3 lengths over 1100m (BM76) on February 25 after never once relinquishing the lead when carrying 62.5kg, she will take some stopping. On January 28, Roughly (61.5kg) held the fence and shared the lead before rolling Flying Start and Cyclonite by 0.8 lengths over 1100m in open company. Jumping from gate seven on February 18 in open class over 1000m, Roughly (62.5kg) settled third before finishing 3.9 lengths behind the winner, Our Luca. Another wide gate might pose an issue, but this 10-year-old mare is backing up after producing a truly incredible effort last start.

Next Best Again: Quizzle
This former SA galloper has had two starts in the Red Centre for two seconds, and it might well be third time lucky for the four-year-old gelding. He settled well back in his NT debut in a 1000m maiden on January 21 before producing amazing finishing speed to go down by a head behind Tycoons Dior. On February 18, Quizzle was a fair way back in a 1200m maiden before once again coming home with a wet sail – although a dominating Barani prevailed by 3.8 lengths. The son of Sizzling managed a third at Oakbank and a fourth at Balaklava over 1400m, so the distance should not prove a major hurdle.

Best Value: Nordic Lass
This girl is racing well and must be respected. She didn’t do much wrong when third behind the in-form Lethal Encounter and The Last Charge over 1200m (Class 2) on January 28. Along with Tycoons Dior and The Last Charge, Nordic Lass dominated when the trio kicked clear over 1200m (0-58) on February 11 before the six-year-old mare snuck home by half a length. Easily eight lengths behind the leaders with 800m to go over 1200m (Class 2) two weeks ago, the daughter of Magnus wound up at the 600m before hitting top gear in the home straight to finish 1.8 lengths adrift of Envenomate in third place.
