The Alice Springs Turf Club farewells 2024 when it hosts its Christmas meeting this Saturday, with 50 horses accepting for the six-event program. It will be sunny on Saturday with a top temperature of 41C. Pioneer Park will be a dry dirt surface and the rail will be in the true position.

Chief White Sock has returned in fine form this campaign, finding the podium in four consecutive runs since October. That includes two big wins — one over 1000m in BM54 grade, the other over 1100m in 0-58 ranks. Although he faded late to finish third last time out, the five-year-old gelding will take some stopping on Saturday.

Starton has had two starts at Pioneer Park for two wins, finishing strongly both times. The son of Tosen Stardom impressed from 1100-1200m before and during the Darwin Cup Carnival, although he struggled over the longer trips and was 11th in the Darwin Guineas (1600m). Stepping up to 1200m should prove ideal.

BEST VALUE AT ALICE SPRINGS: CALIPARI
Calipari debuted in the Red Centre on November 2 over 1000m in 0-64 grade and pushed the favourite Talent Quest before finishing two lengths adrift in second place. A week later, the nine-year-old gelding did little wrong when finishing fourth behind Chief White Sock over 1100m at 0-58 level. The son of Written Tycoon ran well once again when finishing 2.5 lengths adrift of Starton in fifth place two weeks ago.
