Newcastle Racecourse is the destination for provincial racing on Wednesday evening, with a competitive eight-part program set for decision. The rail is set in the true position for the final 400m, while the remainder of the circuit will have the rail out +2m. The forecast suggests significant rainfall across the region, so although the surface is rated a Good 4 at the time of acceptances, expect the track to be downgraded into the Soft range at some stage. The opening event is scheduled to get underway at at 12:50pm local time.
Best Bet at Newcastle: Hawker Hall
Hawker Hall has been sensational at the trials heading into this first-up assignment, clearing out to score by five lengths in a recent piece of work at this course on April 2. The son of Russian Revolution couldn’t have been more impressive as he rounded them up with ease, suggesting the three-year-old is ready to bounce back after a lone disappointment last preparation. Jason Collett will look to take luck out of the equation and lead from barrier three, and with the chances diminishing outside of the top pick, Hawker Hall should prove hard to hold out at the short price with horse racing bookmakers.

Race 2 – #1 Hawker Hall (3)

Next Best at Newcastle: Bestower
Bestower appears set to peak third-up into the campaign after storming through the line in her most recent outing at Hawkesbury on April 9. The Contributor mare was given an impossible task on that occasion, sitting 11 lengths off the lead before ticking off some strong sectionals at the end of 1500m. Benjamin Osmond takes 2kg off her back after the claim, and with the four-year-old set to relish the step-up to 1850m, expect Bestower to bounce back to form in the Newcastle finale.

Next Best Again at Newcastle: Caltsar
Caltsar debuts on the back of an impressive barrier trial win at Newcastle on April 2, where the son of Calyx was hard ridden to pick up The Warrior in the shadows of the post. He was strong through the line at the end of 920m and appeared to have plenty left in the tank to suggest the 1400m first-up is a good kick-off point for the unraced three-year-old. Ashley Morgan maps to find the one-one from gate two, and provided he can replicate some of that trial form on race day, punters can expect a bold showing by Caltsar in the second leg of the quaddie.
Next Best Again
Race 6 – #1 Caltsar (2)
3yo Gelding | T: Nathan Doyle | J: Ashley Morgan (59kg)
