Trials Report – Six Of The Best

These six horses have trialled pleasingly in recent weeks and this week 20/3/2025 they head back to the racetrack.

Terabyte (3g Majestic Son – Broadbank) Tr. A Herlihy

Debutant at Auckland this Friday night (Race 3) but has been a multiple workout winner at Pukekohe in recent weeks, the most recent (6/3/25) where he settled fourth of 4 before looping around field to lead last 1500m, didn’t flinch when challenged hard over final 300m by Memories (1), did enough to stay in front. MR:2:15.9, 800m in 61.4, 400m in 29.5. Qualified right back in June of last year so astute trainer has been patient. Not an easy task against race winners but should be well prepared for a bold debut.

Fugitive (2g Downbytheseaside – Can’t Teach That) Tr. C & C Dalgety

Stable firing plenty of bullets lately and this fellow obviously rated highly enough to bring north to contest the Young Guns series for 2YOs (Race 8 Auckland this Friday). Multiple trial winner at Ashburton during February before coming north and winning a two horse trial at The Park (14/3/25) by some 12L. Ms Collins the other runner (starts in Race 9). MR:2:01.9, 800m in 56.7, 400m in 27.2. Has drawn ideally at 1 for his debut at the races and can be expected to be highly competitive judging by these trials efforts

Arma Hunter (3g American Ideal – Arma Courage) Tr. R & J Dunn

Burnt punters when favourite on debut at Addington (26/2/25), broke in score up and took no real part in contest. Back to Rangiora trials (6/3/25) and after settling back in 7 horse field, swept up wide around final bend and finished powerfully over the top of his rivals for an impressive heat win. MR:2:02.6, 800m in 58.5, 400m in 29.2. Warning given for the manners after debut run but has scored the pole for his second attempt. Driver choice will be interesting as John Dunn/Tim Williams in Auckland for premier racing. Half to Arma Indie obviously has a motor, a chance for redemption at Addington this Friday in Race 9.

General Jen (3f Captaintreacherous – Gold Elite) Tr. H & A Cullen

Nice second at Rangiora trials (13/3/25) after leading out then trailing A Better Jackalack who held on to win MR:2:01.8, 800m in 56.9, 400m in 27.6. Resumes at Addington Friday night in Race 5. Not sighted since late November when unplaced in Group 1 company. Before that was an impressive Sires Stakes winner in a 1:53MR defeating Captains Mistress and Forever Dream. Has a handy front line draw for her 3YO resumption and has displayed good gate speed during her 2YO campaign where she took on the best of her age group.

Lottie’s Moment (4m Majestic Son – Love A Moment) Tr. J Morrison

Placed three times from 3 starts as a 2YO when trained by the late Katie Cox, the last of those back in September 2023. Back after a lengthy spell and a rearrangement of the ownership group. Going gangbusters at most recent trials/workouts with wins on the grass at both Motukarara (8/3/25) and  Methven (1/3/25). Her new trainer has a positive opinion about his new charge and she gets a chance to make up for lost time at Waimate (grass at Oamaru) on Sunday in Race 1

Always B Royal (4m Always B Miki – Presidential Reign) Tr. K & J Price

Goes to Winton on Saturday for her debut in Race 2 after a string of solid trial/workout performances in the deep south. Those included wins over the impressive debut winner Utah Jazz (whom the Prices also bred). At Winton (6/3/25) she trailed and easily dealt to her rivals in a MR:2:02.6, 800m in 56.7, 400m in 28.2. The trainers produce a very good quality of horse and as commercial breeders they will be wanting this mare to perform on the track if she is to make their broodmare band at a later date. Top southern driver on board and the second line draw may work out over the sprint journey.
