The Pago Pago Stakes is a Group 3 race for two-year-old colts and geldings, run over 1200m at Rosehill by the Australian Turf Club.
First held in 1978, it serves as a key lead-up to the Group 1 Golden Slipper (1200m), with the winner gaining ballot exemption.
Four horses have completed the Pago Pago–Golden-Golden Slipper double, with the most recent being Shinzo (2023).
Originally run as the Pago Pago Quality under handicap conditions, the Pago Pago Stakes became a set weights race in 1985.
The Pago Pago Stakes was upgraded to Group 2 in 1987 before reverting to Group 3 in 2017.
Pago Pago, the 1963 Golden Slipper winner, was the first interstate-trained horse to win the race.
The 2024 Pago Pago Stakes, worth $250,000, was won by Dublin Down, defeating Anode and Coleman.
Notable past winners include Rory’s Jester, Stratum, Zeditave, Strategic, Shogun Lodge, All Too Hard, Written By, and Shaquero.

Recent runnings of the Pago Pago Stakes:
-
Tim Clark led from start to finish aboard the Tony & Calvin McEvoy-trained Dublin Down, winning the 2025 Group 2 Pago Pago Stakes (1200m) at Rosehill. Jumping from barrier 6, Clark ensured Anode couldn’t cross to the lead. Passing the 800m, Clark was in his preferred position, with Anode back in second. As they entered the straight, Clark extended his lead, holding off a late challenge from Anode, who closed in but fell short by a long neck. Coleman and Tyler Schiller finished third, 1.75 lengths behind, while $2.10 favourite Gatsby’s was fourth, 2.20 lengths from the winner.
-
Team Coolmore has another runner heading into the 2023 Group 1 Golden Slipper, as Shinzo proved too good for the boys in the 2023 Group 3 Pago Pago Stakes. James McDonald elected to go back to last on the Chris Waller-trained Snitzel colt and it proved to be a winning move turning for home on a genuine tempo set by Introducing and Zulfiqar. Maharba made his way to NSW after winning the Talindert Stakes at Flemington and got the perfect run just in behind the speed to run on into second. Bases Loaded was as consistent as ever finding the minor money, while Introducing fell into fourth position after doing all the work up on speed. Shinzo was too good for them however, making his way from last to first.
-
Two-year-old colt Rise Of The Masses became the final horse to secure a start in the 2022 Golden Slipper after a strong on-pace victory in the 2022 Group 3 Pago Pago Stakes (1200m) at Rosehill. The son of Russian Revolution was given a terrific ride by Tim Clark from barrier four, toughing it out to win by half a length in the 1200m event. Trained by Gai Waterhouse & Adrian Bott, Rise Of The Masses started a $6 chance in the Group 3 feature.
