The Peter Young Stakes is a Group 2 weight-for-age race run over 1800m at Caulfield by the Melbourne Racing Club.
Established in 1900 as the St George Stakes, the Peter Young Stakes was renamed in 2012 to honour former MRC chairman Peter Young.
Traditionally a key lead-up to the Group 1 Australian Cup (2000m), the race has occasionally been held at Flemington and Sandown due to track renovations.
The 2024 Peter Young Stakes winner was Campionessa, defeating Vow And Declare and Gold Trip.
Notable past winners include Phar Lap, Ajax, Leilani, Vo Rogue, Let’s Elope, Northerly, Lonhro, Fiorente, and Cascadian.
Several winners have completed the Peter Young–Australian Cup double, most recently Fiorente (2014).

A proven Group 1 star in her homeland, Kiwi mare Campionessa added valuable Australian black-type to her CV with a determined win in the 2024 Group 2 Peter Young Stakes (1800m). Rider Michael Dee had Campionessa ideally placed in fourth on the rail behind the front-running El Soleado and Unusual Culture. Briefly boxed in at the home turn, Campionessa found clear air at the 300m mark and soon surged into contention. Veteran stayer Vow And Declare went with her and turned it into a head-bobbing battle through the final 50m, but Campionessa prevailed in a nail-biting photo finish.

Steinem returned to the races in fine style recording an impressive win in the 2023 Group 2 Peter Young Stakes over 1800m at Sandown, defeating the 2022 Melbourne Cup winner Gold Trip, who flashed home to finish second first-up. With the saddle slipping on Josh Richards’ mount Deny Knowledge, Richards couldn’t control his mare and took up the lead and broke away to lead Keats by over six lengths, with Keats then leading the rest of the field by another three lengths before the home turn. With the break neck speed that was set by Deny Knowledge and Keats, there was no way that they could keep going with 300m to go and they started to puncture as the swoopers, such as Steinem and Gold Trip ran over the top of them late. After running third and second in Perth in December, Steinem mare returned to the races with residual fitness which saw the second favourite outstay her rivals in the final 200m of the event.

The James Cummings-trained Cascadian was a smart winner of the 2022 Group 2 Peter Young Stakes (1800m). The Godolphin galloper was second-up for the event after his third-placed effort in the Group 1 C.F. Orr Stakes (1400m) last start. The odds-on favourite was given a lovely ride by jockey Damian Oliver who won this race for a record sixth time. Oliver had the gelding third on the fence in the early part of the race, before finding clear galloping room and urged the seven-year-old past the Chris Waller-trained Yonkers to score by half a length.
