Feature racing in Tasmania heads to Hobart’s Elwick Racecourse where the Group 3 Mystic Journey Stakes (1200m) and Listed Tasmanian Derby (2200m) headlines the eight-race meeting. Clear skies are forecast for one of the marquee days of racing in the Apple Isle, and despite the track being rated a Soft 5 at the time of acceptances, competitors should be racing on a Good 4 surface come raceday.
The rail will be in its true position throughout, with the opening race set to jump at 2:52pm AEDT.
Mystic Journey Stakes Tip: Geegees Mistruth
Stuart Gandy’s Geegees Mistruth was impressive without winning during the Melbourne Spring Carnival, and as she returns to Tassie, she shapes as the one to beat in Friday’s feature. At her last start over 1200m, she finished under a length off Bellatrix Star, who would go on to claim Group 2 success and place in Group 1 company. Anthony Darmanin will likely have the Wordsmith filly settled in the second half of the field, but if Geegees Mistruth can find a bum to follow in the home straight, she should be justifying her favouritism with horse racing bookmakers.
Mystic Journey Stakes
Race 7 – #13 Geegees Mistruth (10)
3yo Filly | T: Stuart Gandy | J: Anthony Darmanin (53.5kg)
Tasmanian Derby Tip: Likeakalix
The Leanne Gaffney-trained Likeakalix is set to go off as a short-priced favourite with horse racing betting sites, and if he brings anything close to what he has produced this campaign, he should be winning the Tasmanian Derby. The three-year-old gelding won the Listed Launceston Guineas (2100m) by 4.3 lengths when sustaining a long run 600m out from home to suggest the extra 100m will be no issue for the son of Calyx. David Pires will have this bloke stalking the speed, and when asked for an effort, Likeakalix should prove the superior stayer again.
Best Value
Race 5 – #1 Likeakalix (2)
3yo Gelding | T: Leanne Gaffney | J: David Pires (57kg)
Best Bet at Hobart: The Trine
The Trine was game in defeat when finishing second over 1100m on his debut at this track, and on his return to the course and distance, he looks set to go one better. The three-year-old gelding led the field up on that day but was grabbed in the shadows of the winning post. Drawn in barrier one, Mehmet Ulucinar will almost certainly take up the running once again, and in a field where there doesn’t look to be too much pressure, The Trine looks hard to catch in the opener.
Best Bet
Race 1 – #4 The Trine (1)
3yo Gelding | T: Stuart Gandy | J: Mehmet Ulucinar (58kg)
Next Best at Hobart: Zewinna
Zewinna has been nothing short of impressive in her three starts this time in, and the six-year-old mare can go on with the job having won in impressive style at the Hobart 1600m on January 26. Having stalked a strong speed, when the Tough Speed mare was asked for the ultimate effort, she went on to put 3.8 lengths on her rivals. If apprentice Erica Byrne Burke can land in a forward position from barrier six, Zewinna has the turn of foot to overhaul the leaders and should prove too good for BM68 company.
Next Best
Race 6 – #4 Zewinna (6)
6yo Mare | T: John Blacker | J: Erica Byrne Burke (a2) (58.5kg)
