What Cox Plate Day 2024
Where Moonee Valley Racecourse – Gate 2 Feehan Ave, Moonee Ponds VIC 3039
When Saturday, October 26, 2024
First Race 12:10pm AEDT

Cox Plate Day 2024 is here and with a bumper 10-race card set down for decision on Saturday at Moonee Valley, punters are set for a thrilling day of action. The Group 1 Cox Plate (2040m) is ably supported by eight other races at black-type level, and with perfect conditions above mirroring the Good 4 track rating, there should be no excuses for fancied runners throughout the day. The rail remains in its true position, with action getting underway at 12:10pm AEDT.

Race 1: Open Handicap (1000m)

If Katsu is anywhere near his best fresh from a spell, he can run away with the prize in the opener. The five-year-old gelding has three wins from first-up runs, so it is easy to see he does not take long to come to hand. Jordan Childs will look to lead from barrier two, and if the pair can hold out their rivals drawn wide early, Katsu has traditionally proven hard to get past.

Selections:

  • Frilled silks9

  • Holy Racket silks10

  • Ashford Street silks1

Race 2: Group 3 Red Anchor Stakes (1200m)

Despite not winning, the way Bosustow has performed in two runs this campaign suggests the Red Anchor Stakes is a race he is more than capable of winning. The three-year-old colt has been beaten by Angel Capital at both starts, but in this field, he form seemingly stands out like a sore thumb. Blake Shinn will look to land a stalking position from barrier five, and if the pair are in clear air on the home turn, Bosustow will take a power of beating with even luck.

Race 3: Listed Crockett Stakes (1200m)

Everything that Savagery Vibe has produced through two career starts suggest the 1200m on Saturday will suit her perfectly. The three-year-old filly disposed of maiden company with relative ease on debut two back, before finishing midfield in Group 2 company when racing in restricted room when it mattered most. With plenty of speed drawn out wide, Mark Zahra will look to hold a spot one off the rails behind the leaders, and with a swift turn of foot, Savagery Vibe looks the goods in the Listed Crockett Stakes.

Race 4: Group 2 Fillies Classic (1600m)

Double Market produced a strong finish to score at Ballarat on October 3 over 1400m and can go on with the job as she steps up rapidly in grade. The Castelvecchio filly had to make up multiple lengths on the home turn, but she did so running away from her rivals once asked to fully extend. She draws to gain a perfect run in transit from barrier four under Mick Dee, and barring any bad luck in the straight, Double Market should be keeping her undefeated record intact as she steps up to the mile.

Race 5: Group 3 JRA Cup (2040m)

Kingswood was impressive when saluting in the Group 3 Coongy Cup (2000m) and in a somewhat similar field, the JRA Cup is seemingly his to loses. The five-year-old former European has been arrogant in his two wins this campaign, and drawn barrier one on Saturday, seemingly only bad luck will get him beat. John Allen will look to get off the fence approaching the home turn, and as long as he can find clear air, Kingswood finish is too strong for his rivals in this.

Race 6: Group 2 Moonee Valley Vase (2040m)

Politely Dun brought up an overdue maiden victory at Ballarat last time out, and as he steps up in class in the Group 2 Moonee Valley Vase (2004m), he poses a strong threat. Having run on with intent throughout his career, the son of Dundeel simply didn’t know how to put a race away, but with a confidence boosting win under the belt, there is no reason why he cannot go on with the job here. Damian Lane sticks, and if the pair can gain a slipstream into the race when the whips are cracking, Politely Dun will take some holding out.

Race 7: Group 2 McEwen Stakes (1200m)

Mornington Glory put in an uncharacteristic stinker at Caulfield in the Schillaci Stakes, but as he returns to his favourite track, the son of Shalaa can bounce back in style. The six-year-old won the Group 1 Moir Stakes (1000m) two starts ago, but with just one placing from five starts at 1200m, the McEwen Stakes could be an even bigger challenge. However, despite his previous results over the six furlongs, Mornington Glory is a different horse this campaign, and if he produces anything like he did prior to his Caulfield run, he can salute here.

  • Mornington Glory silks3

Race 8: Group 2 Crystal Mile (1600m)

As pointed out in the Follow Files, Plenty Of Ammo was simply outstanding first-up after a nine-month spell. Simon Wilde’s six-year-old mare was crucially up for a run until the final 100m over 1400m at Flemington before launching late to be beaten 1.5 lengths behind Uncle Bryn. The Rebel Raider mare meets Uncle Bryn once again on Saturday, but with a touch more luck this time around, she should have no issue accounting for him and the remainder of her rivals as she steps up to Group company for the first time in her career.

Race 9: Group 1 Cox Plate (2040m)

The Group 1 Cox Plate, some call it the greatest two minutes in sport each year, and this year looks set to be no different. A select field of nine will duke it out for equine immortality, with some of Australia’s best weight-for-age horses and a couple of internationals set to put on one of the greatest shows on turf.

Race 10: Group 3 Tesio Stakes (2040m)

Molly Bloom hardly does much until she has a couple of runs under her belt, and third-up from a spell she looks perfectly placed to bring up a first Australian triumph. The four-year-old mare is a Group 1 winner in New Zealand and has simply found life in Sydney a bit tough to begin her spring campaign. James McDonald hops on board which seems a decent push, and from barrier three, the Ace High mare can potentially settle a touch closer than usual. However, no matter where she settles, Molly Bloom has arguably the best finish in this field and at an each-way quote with horse racing bookmakers, she seems the best way home.
