A massive day of racing awaits punters at Flemington this Saturday afternoon, where the Group 1 Turnbull Stakes will headline the 10-race card.
The 2024 Turnbull Stakes is expected to be one of the best editions of the race in recent time, as nine of the 16 runners are Group 1 winners.
Via Sistina headlines a team of five runners for Chris Waller in the Turnbull, joined by Buckaroo, Atishu, Francesco Guardi and Valiant King.
Following an impressive fresh win, Via Sistina ($3.80) struggled in the heavy conditions in the Makybe Diva Stakes and is expected to enjoy a rise in trip to 2000m on a firmer surface.
Buckaroo ($5) is coming off a dominant victory in the Group 1 Underwood Stakes at Caulfield and a narrow win in the Chelmsford Stakes, which has him pegged as one of the most in-form runners in this year’s Turnbull Stakes.
Even though Eliyass ($5) is not one of the Group 1 winners in this field, the Gai Waterhouse & Adrian Bott-trained import boasts an incredible record, with nine wins and two seconds from 11 career starts.
Since joining the Waterhouse & Bott stable, the son of Le Havre has claimed victory in each of his three starts, including back-to-back Group 3 triumphs at Randwick this time in.
2024 Queensland Derby winner and the lone four-year-old, Warmonger, will compete in the Turnbull following his fourth-place finish in the Makybe Diva Stakes first-up.
Graeme & Deborah Rogerson will have Sharp ‘N’ Smart represent their yard in the Turnbull, with their stable star returning to Australia for the first time since he competed in the Group 1 Australian Derby in April, 2023.
The glaring omission from the race is Fawkner Park, with Annabel Neasham & Rob Archibald choosing not to accept for one of the key lead-up races for the Group 1 Caulfield Cup on October 19.
The Turnbull Stakes will be race eight on the Flemington program and is scheduled to jump at 4:25pm AEST.
