Craven Plate

The Craven Plate is a Group 3 horse race that is held at Randwick Racecourse, run under weight for age conditions for open class horses, and boasts a $750,000 prize pool.

Since the inaugural running of the Craven Plate in 1867, it had been run as a 2000m contest, bar one running in 2001; however, since 2022 the race was reduced to 1800m.

The Craven Plate was classified a Principal Race from 1867 to 1978, before the race was upgraded to Listed level in 1984, after not being run for the previous five years. From 1993, the Craven Plate has been classified as a Group 3 contest.

• 2022: Cascadian claims Craven Plate with ease
  Cascadian (-142.86) has justified his odds on quote by taking out the 2022 Group 3 Craven Plate at Randwick on Saturday. After settling at the back of the field, James McDonald sweated on a gap to appear and when it did, his gelding let down with a strong turn of foot to take the lead and kick clear in the final 100m. Just Folk (+1000) and Promitto (+1200) battled on for second and third, respectively.
• 2021: Think It Over goes back-to-back
  After claiming the same race 12 months ago, Think It Over (-133.33) has claimed the Group 3 Craven Plate again, but in emphatic style as the odds-on race favourite. Nash Rawiller rode his gelding as though it was the best in the race, and made sure he stayed out of trouble before pushing the button at the 200m mark to clear out for a big win. Sky Lab (+1300) tried to go with the winner and ran into second, while Lion’s Roar (+900) stuck on for third after leading the field up.
• 2020: Think It Over proves too good in Craven Plate
  Nash Rawiller has given Think It Over (+1400) a very intelligent rails hugging ride to claim the Group 3 Craven Plate at Randwick. After the leader Quintessa (+750) rolled off the rail at the top of the home straight, it gave Rawiller plenty of room to move and when he took the lead, the son of So You Think pushed through and took the lead with 150m to go. Nettoyer (+1700) and Vanna Girl (+450) battled on for second and third, respectively.
• 2019: Happy Clapper leads all the way in Group 3 Craven Plate
  A dominant front-running ride from Tommy Berry has seen Happy Clapper (+270) take out the Group 3 Craven Plate at Randwick. As the field rounded the home bend, it was easy to see that the son of Teofilo was going much better than Stampede (+550) who was under hard riding, while Berry still had a vice-like grip on his mount. The challengers came from behind, with Tally (+1200) and Life Less Ordinary (+550) making their runs together, but they would come up short and fill the placings behind the tough winner.
