Group Two Betting Guide
Date: Saturday, October 28, 2023
Location: Randwick Racecourse – Sydney, New South Wales
Prize Money: $1,000,000
Distance: 1600m

The Callander-Presnell is a Group 2 race that is held at Randwick Racecourse, run under Set Weights conditions for three-year-olds and boasts a $1,000,000 prize pool.

This race used to be known as the Stan Fox Stakes; however, the race was renamed to the Callander-Presnell in 2022 to recognise the contributions that both Ken Callander and Max Presnell have made to racing.

The inaugural edition of the Stan Fox Stakes was classified as a Principal Race until 1984 before it was upgraded to a Listed race from 1985 to 1988. From 1989 until 1995, the race was classified as a Group 3 contest but was upgraded to Group 2 level from 1996 onwards.

With the Callander-Presnall now run over 1600m, it will turn out to be a second target race for three-year-olds if they happen to miss or run well (without winning) in the Group 1 Caulfield Guineas two weeks earlier.

Notable winners of the Callander-Presnell include Golden Mile (2022), Peltzer (2020), Impending (2016), Press Statement (2015), Shooting To Win (2014), Denman (2009), Paratroopers (2005), Lonhro (2001), Octagonal (1995) and Show County (1989).

Recent Callander-Presnell results

  • Golden Mile provided James Cummings with his second Randwick winner for the day with a hard-fought victory in the Group 2 Callander-Presnell. Winner of the Group 1 Caulfield Guineas last start, Golden Mile jumped as +130 favourite with online bookmakers with Hugh Bowman onboard. After drifting back to third last on settling from barrier 10, he honed in quickly on the leaders down the straight before going head for head with Communist (+450) who wouldn’t give in without a fight.
  • The Michael, Wayne & John Hawkes-trained Hilal (+700) returned to his best when defeating the even money race favourite Coastwatch (+100) in the 2021 Group 2 Stan Fox Stakes at Randwick. Both the winner and the runner-up made their runs at the same time, with Berry going down the outside on the winner and McDonald the inside on the runner-up. The two kicked clear to fight out the finish, with Hilal getting the upper hand in the final 50m.
  • Peltzer (+170) from the Gerald Ryan & Sterling Alexiou yard has claimed the Group 2 Stan Fox Stakes after leading every step of the 1500m at Randwick. Tim Clark gave the winner a great front-running ride and when the son of So You Think kicked clear at the 300m mark, the race was all but over. Both Prime Star (+270) and Master Delight (+320) ran home well into second and third, respectively.
  • After being sent out as the second roughest runner in the race, the Gerald Ryan & Sterling Alexiou-trained Colada (+1900) has led all the way and caused a boilover in the Group 2 Stan Fox Stakes at Randwick. Robbie Dolan went out with daring tactics and took off from the front mid-race, and even though he started to tire late, the son of Brazen Beau won by two lengths on the line. Brandenburg (+800) and the race favourite Bottega (+120) flew home late to fill the placings.
