A rare Sunday meeting at Flemington is set to greet us this weekend, with an eight-race program set down for judgement. The VRC Derby Trial and VRC Oaks Trial headline proceedings, with a golden ticket on offer to the Group 1 features during the Melbourne Cup Carnival. The track will be in perfect order, the rail comes out 14m the entire circuit, and racing commences at 1:30pm AEST.
VRC Derby Trial Tip – Sunsource
Sunsource already has a spot in the VRC Derby (2500m) sewn up after winning the Byerley Handicap in July. The three-year-old colt ran on strongly against the track bias at Moonee Valley on August 26 to have him primed for a race like this. Already a winner at the Flemington 1800m, we know he will handle the occasion, and as long as Damien Oliver can find a tow into the race on the home turn, we expect Sunsource to return to the winner’s stall.

VRC Oaks Trial Tip – Served Gold
The Danny O’Brien-trained Served Gold managed to break maiden ranks with a dominant on-pace victory at Geelong on September 3 over 1700m, and the step up to 1800m third-up look perfect. From barrier two, Blake Shinn will look to stalk the speed throughout, and when asked for an effort, we anticipate Served Goal will prove a class above this lot as she stamps her ticket for the 2023 VRC Oaks (2500m).

Best Bet at Flemington – Dancing Alone
It was a tough watch for Dancing Alone fans at Randwick last time out when the Bryce Heys-trained runner saw nothing but backsides in the home straight. The four-year-old mare looked to have plenty left to offer if she found clear air, so we expect she will right those wrongs in this BM70 affair. She does draw trickily in barrier one, but with Blake Shinn on board and a long Flemington straight to work with, Dancing Alone should prove too strong for this lot.

Next Best at Flemington – Insulation
Insulation was a smart BM76 winner at the Morphettville 1950m on August 26. The four-year-old gelding now steps back to a BM70, and despite needing to lug 60.5kg in this 2550m affair, he looks to have a bit of class on his side. Luke Nolen will look to lob in midfield with cover from barrier seven, and if Insulation puts in a similar performance to last time, the step up in trip should be no issue.
