Hong Kong racing returns to Sha Tin to kick off the 2023/24 season with a strong 10-race program on Sunday afternoon. The rail will be in the A position throughout the entire circuit, and with plenty of rain forecast over the weekend, it will be a surprise if we are not racing on a yielding surface. The opening event is set to get underway at 12:25pm HKT (2:25pm AEST).

Greenwich was an ultra-impressive winner on June 25 before the Hong Kong racing season came to an end, producing a dominant front-running display to score by 1.3 lengths. He’s an untapped sprinter by War Decree and put the writing on the wall with that maiden victory, indicating he has plenty of upside. His barrier trials have only suggested he’s trained on well for the Pierre Ng stable, and with Zac Purton electing to stick aboard this four-year-old gelding, Greenwich will give followers a massive sight turning for home.

Next Best: Supreme Lucky
Supreme Lucky is a sprinter on the rise and continues to be plagued with horror barrier draws. He drew barrier 11 in his latest effort at Sha Tin on May 28, forcing Zac Purton to take the lightly raced five-year-old back to last turning into the straight. He cannoned down the centre of the course and only missed out by 2.8 lengths. We expect Purton to be much more positive on Sunday from barrier nine, and even if Supreme Lucky sits on a three-wide line, he’s the class in this field.

Next Best Again: Ruby Sailing
Ruby Sailing returns after two minor placings in Griffin company behind a very progressive sprinter, Ka Ying Victory. He wasn’t disgraced by any means, and we want to trust the form as the son of Starspangledbanner makes his way into Class 4 company for the first time. His effort down the Sha Tin 1000m straight was an eye-catcher, chasing gamely to be beaten by less than a length while running quick time. He draws to get a lovely run in transit, and if Ruby Sailing isn’t leading at some stage, it would come as a shock.
