Cranbourne racecourse

Cranbourne Turf Club has been a major country racing venue in Victoria since commencing operations in 1867. Since 2012, Cranbourne Racecourse has been a central element of Victoria’s summer racing series, giving the likes of Moonee Valley a break from its rigorous use throughout a racing season.

These Friday evening meetings make up a big portion of Cranbourne’s race-days throughout the calendar year, with a total of 23 race meetings scheduled to take place at the track, located south-east of Melbourne city.

The Listed Cranbourne Cup (1600m) is considered the feature event for the club, gaining plenty of admirers with the now $500,000 in prize money gaining plenty attention across the state – evening greeting some international flavor as Folkswood (2017) took out the race for Charlie Appleby and Godolphin.

Cranbourne racecourse address & how to get there

Cranbourne Racecourse is located at 50 Grant St, Cranbourne, Victoria, 3977 and is approximately 40 minutes south-east of Melbourne.

If you live in the area, obviously the best way to get there is via Car, Taxi or Uber; however, if you live in the Melbourne City you can always find consistent public transport to get out to the Cranbourne races.

If you decide to drive to Cranbourne Turf Club, you’ll want to get on the M1 and head south. Once on the Monash you’ll need to exit at the M420 and from there it’s not far away with the course located in the northern part of Cranbourne.

If public transport is more your speed, Southern Cross Station provides regularly trains to Cranbourne; however, you will need to terminate Dandenong before getting to Cranbourne Train Station. From there, it’s an eight-minute Taxi or Uber to the course.


Cranbourne race track and specifications

Cranbourne Racecourse is an anti-clockwise circuit with a circumference of 1690m and a home straight of 300m for gallopers to navigate.

The Cranbourne course has two chute starting positions. Firstly, the 2050m start is located near the home turn, while the other is a much deeper chute situated on the other side of the racecourse. These starting points include the 1200m, 1300m, 1400m and 1600m all utilizing the far part of the track.


Major races at Cranbourne racetrack

As mentioned previously, the Cranbourne Cup (1600m) is considered the biggest draw at Cranbourne with the $500,000 feature producing some quality wins since it’s inception in 1960. On A Jeune (2004), Folkswood (2017) and the latest heading winnter the way of Trent Busuttin & Natalie Young-trained Uncle Brynn (2022).

Interestingly, the club takes great pride in the horse racing champion Manikato won at his first start at the Cranbourne Turf Club, subsequently going on to win Group 1 features including the Blue Diamond Stakes, Golden Slipper and Caulfield Guineas in the same year (1978). The Manikato Stakes is named after the champion horse.
