The Darwin Cup Carnival goes up another gear on Saturday with $320,000 up for grabs. The feature events on the seven-race program include the $135,000 NT Derby (2050m), $50,000 Buntine Handicap (2050m) and $35,000 Weight-For-Age (1200m).

There are 68 acceptors on Saturday with sunny conditions and light winds the forecast and a top temperature of 33C. The rail will be in the true position and Fannie Bay will be a good dirt surface.

The seven-year-old gelding, arguably the best horse to emanate from the NT, returns to the Top End for the first time in three years which should add to the excitement on Saturday. Headed back to the Red Centre after finishing 10th in the Group 1 Manikato Stakes (1200m) at Moonee Valley last October before returning during the Alice Springs Cup Carnival in April to seal victory over 1200m at weight-for-age level where he rolled Expert Witness and Smuggling. In May, the son of Kuroshio won at Group 3 level at Morphettville (1100m) before disappointing in the Group 1 Goodwood (1200m) – a race Savatoxl won in 2021. The one to beat as he pursues his fourth win from seven starts in Darwin.

NEXT BEST: EUREKA’S VICTORY

The winner qualifies for the $200,000 Darwin Cup (2050m) on August 7, so it should prove an intriguing race. Eureka’s Victory, formerly of Robert Heathcote’s stable at Eagle Farm, has starred in the NT. In in four starts in 22 days in Alice Springs in April the four-year-old gelding managed a first over 1400m (0-70), a third over 1600m (0-66), a first over 1600m (BM68) against the three and four-year-olds, and another first over 2000m (BM76). The son of Epaulette was a narrow fourth with 61kg on his back over 1600m (0-70) in his Darwin debut on July 1 before a last start win over 1600m (BM70) a fortnight ago. His only win in Queensland was in a 2170m maiden at Ipswich in December.

Trainer Kerry Petrick and jockey Paul Denton are looking for back-to-back wins in the NT Derby after Venting saluted 12 months ago. Anphina produced decent form in Victoria and SA for Stawell trainer despite the fact that the filly’s only win was over 1400m (BM62) against her own age group at Morphettville last September. The 2050m won’t be a burden for Rebel Dane’s daughter after a fourth in the Group 3 Auraria Stakes (1800m), an 11th in the Group 1 Australasian Oaks (2000m) and a sixth in the Group 3 SA Fillies Classic (2500m) in Adelaide in April and May. A debut seventh against her own age group over 1300m (BM66) in the Top End in June was followed by an eye-catching third in the Darwin Guineas (1600m) two weeks ago.
