What Civic Stakes Day
Where Royal Randwick Racecourse – Alison Rd, Randwick NSW 2031
When Saturday, June 24, 2023
First Race 11am AEST

Royal Randwick Racecourse is the destination for NSW racing this Saturday with a massive 10-race program lined up for Civic Stakes Day. The rail is out +6m the entire circuit, and with minimal rain forecast leading into race-day, we’re confident the Good 4 surface listed at the time of writing will hold for the weekend. The first race is set to get underway at 11am AEST.

Civic Stakes Tips: Longvillers

The Chris Waller-trained Longvillers has had two starts since arriving in Australia, and while his first preparation may have left a lot to be desired, his barrier trials heading into the weekend are that of a horse acclimatising well to his new environment. This son of Le Havre will be making his return from a 196-day spell, and his jump-outs have been impressive – particularly the way he worked through the line in his latest trial at Rosehill on June 20. It’s a short turnaround from trial to race-day, and with Longvillers looking primed to run well first-up, he’s worth an each-way ticket with online bookmakers.

Race 8 – #9 Longvillers (14)

5yo Gelding | T: Chris Waller | J: Jason Collett (55kg)

Best Bet: Contemporary

Contemporary has put the writing on the wall his last couple of starts and now stepping to the 1300m while dropping back in grade to BM72 level. He was competitive behind the in-form Devils Throat at Rosehill on June 3, just running out of time when powering through the line to only be beaten less than half-length. The extra 100m should do this three-year-old gelding a world of good, and with the 1.5kg claim courtesy of leading apprentice Zac Lloyd returning from suspension, Contemporary shouldn’t be far away from bringing up his third career win.

Race 4 – #1 Contemporary (7)

Next Best: The Mediterranean

The Mediterranean comes third-up since arriving to the Sara Ryan yard from the UK and looks ready to peak in this 2600m contest. His first two appearances have come at Listed level, and his latest behind Al Aabir in the Winter Cup at Rosehill showed significant improvement. All his best European form has come over the staying journey behind some elite company – including the Yibir, Hurricane Lane and Search For A Song. The Mediterranean only knows one way and that’s to lead throughout, and if he can pinch a cheap sectional or two, he’s bound to give us a huge sight turning in.

Next Best

Race 3 – #1 The Mediterranean (3)

5yo Colt | T: Sara Ryan | J: Reece Jones (62kg)

Best Value: Darlington County

At Warwick Farm on June 12, in her Australian debut, Darlington County ran into a smart one in King Of The Castle and chased home valiantly despite it being short of her best trip. She finds the 1800m journey at an ideal time, and the fact Chris Waller has elected to head up in grade shows intent from the stable. Jason Collett will need to give a perfect steer from stall eight, but if Darlington County gets any luck, the $8 available with the best betting sites will look like big overs.

Best Value

Race 6 – #10 Darlington County (8)
