The Hillside track at Sandown Racecourse is the destination for metropolitan racing in Victoria this Saturday afternoon with nine events scheduled. A fair amount of rain has fallen in Melbourne’s southeast leading up to the meeting, and despite better weather forecast for Friday and Saturday, we expect to be racing on a Soft 6 or 7 throughout the card. The rail comes out 5m, which should create hardly any bias, and racing commences at 11:50am AEST.
Best Bet at Sandown: He’s Our Bonneval
In the penultimate race of the day, He’s Our Bonneval will be looking to strike third-up from a spell. The Trent Busuttin & Natalie Young-trained runner comes to this 1300m event on the back of a strong showing over 1400m on May 27. He was a touch unlucky last time out when bombing the start and needing to use up a bit of energy early, and that tolled late when peaking on his run inside the final 100m to be beaten by a length. Third-up and back to the 1300m looks ideal for this gelded son of Siyouni, and with Wiremu Pinn’s 3kg claim he gets in perfectly with just 55.5kg on his back. He is proven on wet ground, and as long as he does not get caught in traffic from the rear of the field, He’s Our Bonneval should be too good for this Benchmark 84 field.

Next Best at Sandown: Elkington Road
The Mike Moroney-trained Elkington Road brought up a deserved win at this track and trip last time out. Returning to the Hillside 1600m this weekend, we expect he will go on with the job. He was aided by an inch-perfect steer from Jamie Mott on that day and managed to get his head down when it mattered most. He was allocated 60kg for this, but with Wiremu Pinn hoping on board and claiming 3kg he gets in nicely with 57kg under these handicap conditions. Any further rain we get will only benefit him, having won on three occasions from six goes on rain-affected ground. From barrier 14, look for Pinn to try and land a spot in the three-wide line with cover. When asked for an effort, we’re hoping his race fitness and touch of class will shine through.

Best Value at Sandown: Irish Butterfly
Henry Dwyer’s Irish Butterfly has not been since his midfield finish in the Listed Warrnambool Cup five weeks ago. The seven-year-old son of O’Reilly seemingly didn’t handle the seven-day backup at the ‘Bool following his dominant victory at the Sandown 2400m back on April 29. He returns to the track and trip that saw him record consecutive victories prior to the Warrnambool Cup run, both coming when dictating terms out in front. He should get the opportunity to do so once again on the weekend. We’re hoping it is a big day for Wiremu Pinn, whose 3kg claim gets Irish Butterfly in with a very manageable 58.5kg on his back.
