What Adelaide River Cup Day
Where Fannie Bay Racecourse – Dick Ward Dr, Fannie Bay NT 0820
When Saturday, June 3, 2023
First Race 1:51pm ACST

It’s Adelaide River Cup Day, but with heavy rain during the wet season leaving the grassed track unfit for racing, the Darwin Turf Club will host the meeting. This is the second year in a row that the event has been relocated to Fannie Bay, with feral pigs leaving the Adelaide River track in an unsuitable state in 2022.

The fields might be on the light side, but 42 runners have accepted for what should prove to be a highly competitive seven-race meeting. The $30,000 Adelaide River Cup (1600m) is the last event on the program.

It still hasn’t rained since April 27 and sunny conditions will once again be the order of the day with light winds and a top temperature of 30C. The rail will be in the true position and the track will be a good dirt surface.

Adelaide River Cup Best Bet: Siakam

This guy is in good form, which comes as no surprise as his record in Darwin sits at seven wins, seven seconds, four thirds, a fourth and two fifths from 23 starts since making a winning Fannie Bay debut in May 2021. After winning the $40,000 St Patrick’s Day Cup (1600m) by three lengths on March 18, the five-year-old gelding was pipped by 0.2 lengths over 1600m (BM65) at the hands of Eurellydidit on April 14 as a $1.90 favourite with online bookmakers, before hitting back to lead his rivals a merry dance and salute over 1300m in open class by two lengths on May 20.

Next Best at Darwin: Fraction Late

After two narrow defeats, this four-year-old gelding snuck home by 0.2 lengths from Barragunda over 1200m (Class 2) on May 23 as a $1.55 favourite with the top betting sites. Returning from a seven-month spell, he was a first-up second over 1100m (0-58) behind Global Wonder. A prohibitive $1.50 favourite on ANZAC Day over 1100m (0-58), the son of Soobog went down by half a length at the hands of Zip Lane. Fraction Late definitely has ability, but the fact he has drawn the outside gate in an eight-horse field and will carry an extra 5kg will certainly put him to the test. Pop Magic, Hattan Man and Patriotic King will provide stiff opposition, but with the highly experienced Paul Shiers in the saddle, Fraction Late is clearly the one to beat. His only other win was in an 1100m maiden last July.

Best Value at Darwin: Super Famous

Super Famous didn’t do a lot wrong in Alice Springs and Darwin last year as a three-year-old and kicked off his 2023 Top End campaign with a first-up third behind Pop Magic and Hattan Man over 1100m (BM54) on May 20 – albeit he was five lengths behind the winner. It’s hard to ignore his five starts before and during the Darwin Cup Carnival when he managed two wins, a second and two thirds against quality opposition from 1100-1300m. He didn’t fire a shot in two starts at Morphettville late last year over 1050m, and in four starts before and during the recent Alice Springs Cup Carnival his best effort was a fourth over 1000m (0-62). His final Red Centre start was on Cup Day (April 30) when 12th over 1200m (0-62). A four-year-old gelding nowadays, Super One’s son must be respected despite lumping 61kg.

Race 3 – Silk #2 Super Famous (1)
