60th success for Kiwi bred

Evergreen pacer Crocket’s Cullen has just had his 60th career win. Bred by North Canterbury’s David Cottrell, the now 12-year-old son of Christian Cullen won three from 15 before being sold to Australia in 2016 where he won another 11 times in Victoria and New South Wales. He then headed to North America where he has now won another 46 times. His 60th career win was in a $US20,000 race at Plainridge Park in a time of 1.51, six tenths of a second outside his lifetime best.

Marshall’s breakthrough win across the Tasman

Kyle Marshall has trained and driven his first winner since moving from New Zealand to Australia after five-year-old gelding Wharewhiti powered home to win a maiden mile at Shepparton yesterday. Marshall dropped the favourite behind the leading bunch and patiently took a sit one out and four back. With half a lap to go, he took Wharewhiti three wide, confidently striding past the co-leaders, and then took control in the run to the line. Wharewhiti paid just $1.40 for the win.

Eight race winner on the move

Macandrew Aviator has moved to Stephen Boyd’s stables at West Melton near Christchurch after being with Kirstin Green down south. The winner of eight of 36 starts last raced in February before being diagnosed with a suspensory injury. The horse’s recovery is ongoing with the water walker at Boyd’s place being a key factor in him staying in Canterbury. All going well he’ll be aimed at the New Zealand Cup in November.

Volstead has first NZ winner

Volstead had his first New Zealand winner at Alexandra Park on Friday night when We Can Have It All, proved too good in the inaugural Listed $40,000 IRT Young Guns North Island 2YO Trotters Final. Driven by Blair Orange, the Mark and Nathan Purdon trained filly was having just her third race day start. She beat favourite The Moonstone who was fracticious in the score up and staged a great recovery, and the third-placed High Step.
