Milford on trial for Queensland

Milford (NZ) (Savabeel) is set to join a strong crop of his stablemates from Mike Moroney’s yard with a trip to Queensland, if he performs up to expectation at Flemington on Tuesday.

Moroney’s only runner at Flemington for the VRC ANZAC Day race day, Milford will contest the Les Carlyon Handicap (1700m).

“We are, we’d like to think that we could get there and we’ll go well,” Moroney said.

“They’ve got the 2200-metre race up there (the Q22), which would be nice for him.”

If Milford does head north for the Q22 at Eagle Farm in May, it will most likely be alongside stablemate Bankers Choice (NZ) (Mongolian Khan).

“Possibly, but we more so think he’s sort of a 2200 metre horse,” Moroney said.

“He’ll (Bankers Choice) go to the (A.D.) Hollindale (Stakes) into the Doomben Cup and then possibly into the Q22 race as well.

“That would be his three main races I would think.”

Dual Group One winner Roch ‘N’ Horse (NZ) (Per Incanto) is also likely to head to Queensland via Adelaide’s G1 Sangster Stakes, while Moroney has decided to spell several of his team with a view to spring targets.

“They’ll have a spell and they won’t be sent back for work until the end of May, and then we’ll start to get them ready for the spring,” Moroney said.

“Emissary will be heading back to the Melbourne Cup again, he ran second.

“Alenquer, well we think Caulfield Cup is more his go, the mile-and-a-half from what we’ve seen so far.

“Japanese Emperor, he’s got a bit of work to do, he looks a nice miler to me, like I think he could go to the Toorak and those sorts of races.”
