The Alice Springs Turf Club will host a highly competitive six-event meeting on Saturday with chances galore in each race. The two feature events on the program have attracted good fields – a $23,100 race for the speedy types over 1000m, and a $23,100 open handicap over 1400m. Likely starters in the Pioneer Sprint and Alice Springs Cup will more than likely be on deck.
There has been no rain since March 4, with a sunny forecast on Friday and Saturday accompanied by light easterly winds. A top temperature of 37C is tipped for Saturday. The rail will be in the true position and it will once again be a good dirt surface for the 51 acceptors.
Best Bet: Marimenko
Marimenko has arrived in the Red Centre for the Alice Springs Cup Carnival, and respectable Victorian form suggests the six-year-old gelding could make a serious impact during the month of April. Perhaps success in the Pioneer Sprint if all goes according to plan. The son of Zoffany has only had 13 career starts for two wins, three seconds and two thirds, and is generally strong first-up following a spell. Marimenko hasn’t raced since November 2 when fifth over 1400m (BM70) at Bendigo and it will be interesting to see how he adapts to Pioneer Park’s dirt surface. His last win was back in September 2021 over 1400m (Class 1), but in six starts in Melbourne last year he was placed on three occasions.

Next Best: Garrucha
This guy is backing up after making an impressive debut at Pioneer Park last Sunday when third behind the winner Fluffy Bunny Feet and Rupert’s Delight over 1100m (Class 2). Shared the lead when sitting three wide outside Fluffy Bunny Feet, who was on the fence, and Superior Power and was still in the mix turning for home. It was only in the final 150m that Garrucha tired when Rupert’s Delight finished strongly for second. It was the three-year-old gelding’s first run since June last year when third in a 1200m Donald maiden. In his one and only other start the son of Street Boss was second in a 1000m Bendigo maiden two weeks previously. Dropping back to maiden level certainly does boost his hopes.

Best Value: Super Famous
Super Famous debuted in the NT last year and managed three wins, two seconds, three thirds and a fifth from nine starts – four in Alice Springs and five in Darwin. The four-year-old gelding failed to fire a shot in two starts over 1050m at Morphettville late last year, but the way he adapted to the dirt at Pioneer Park and Fannie Bay suggests that he is worthy of consideration and through the week he was quoted as a $9 chance. The son of Super One boasted good form in Queensland before a first up win over 1100m (0-58) in the Red Centre on April 2. He was placed in two of his next three starts before heading to Darwin where he never finished out of a place against fellow three-year-olds over the short course.
