What Warwick Farm Races
Where Warwick Farm Racecourse – Governor Macquarie Dr, Warwick Farm NSW 2170
When Wednesday, March 15, 2023
First Race 1:45pm AEDT

Metropolitan racing heads to Warwick Farm on Wednesday afternoon for a competitive eight-race program. The rail is out +3m the entire circuit, and with rain expected on both Monday and Tuesday, the current Good 4 surface could see a downgrade in the coming days. The first race is set to get underway at 1:45pm AEDT.

Best Bet: Pungo

Pungo looks to have plenty of upside moving forward, and we think he can pick up career win number three on Wednesday afternoon. First-up on February 24 at Canterbury over the 1250m, this son of So You Think had a lot of ground to make up after turning for home from last, but he picked up with a stunning turn-of-foot to nose out Twice As Special on the winning post. It was a win that showed his quality attributes, and he should only be building on that moving to the 1400m. He goes up into BM78 level, gets in nicely with the 56kg, and draws an ideal gate to ping the lids and find the leaders’ backs throughout. With any luck turning for home, it shouldn’t be as painful a watch as last time. He’s a classy type and we want to be with him.

Next Best: Side Show

The second race on the program sees the two-year-olds step out over the 1400m, and Side Show looks a terrific chance here. His first career start behind Corniche in the Group 2 Skyline Stakes looks a strong form-line for a race like this. He ran into fourth on that occasion after bombing the start and making late inroads sneaking rails runs. It was a bold debut effort from the Trapeze Artist colt on what was arguably inferior ground. Since that race we’ve seen Shinzo smash his rivals in the Todman Stakes last Saturday moving into this weekend’s Group 1 Golden Slipper, while Bases Loaded found the frame in the same event. This is a significant drop in class, and from barrier seven Kerrin McEvoy should be able to be more positive and press for a forward position. Side Show looks a nice type moving forward and this looks a great setup by the Ryan & Alexiou team.

Next Best Again: Goldman

Goldman is one of the more interesting runners at Warwick Farm on Wednesday as he comes here second-up for his new stable. He won at Kembla Grange by a dominant 5.3-length margin, careering away from his rivals when sitting outside the leader throughout the 2000m journey. While the win came at BM64 level, he appears to be more progressive than that, and this looks a manageable task moving up drastically in grade to BM78 company. Goldman looks the natural leader on the speed map, and barrier six should see Regan Bayliss adopt similar tactics to what unfolded in this guy’s first-up win on February 23. He’s a proven winner with five starts for three wins, and on Wednesday he should get every opportunity to chalk up a fourth.
