Jump The Broom may have finished first past the post; however, with plenty of interference with 100m to go, it was Jal Lei who took out the Wenona Girl Quality.
The leader throughout the 1200m contest, Jump The Broom, veered off his running line under Zac Lloyd and cause significant interference on the originally third placed Tycoon Evie, almost causing Zac Purton to be dislodged.
In the process of trying to regain control of his mount, Purton unintentionally caused Jal Lei to swerve off his racing line as well.
The race results finished with Jal Lei finishing in first position, Tycoon Evie moving into second, with Jump The Broom demoted into third position.
2023 Group 3 Weona Girl Quality – Jai Lei
Despite the ugly circumstances that resulted in the win, it was impressive non the less as Jal Lei had proven to be a consistent four-year-old mare.
Jal Lei was building the revs nicely, as was the eventual second placegetter, Tycoon Evie, who was impressive on resumption as well.
John O’Shea spoke after the fallout and was just happy to get the result all things considered and kept it very simply with his post-race assessment.
“We’ll take a win in a stakes race for a mare any day,” said O’Shea.
Jockey Reece Jones reflected a similar sentiment in his comments as well.
“Not how I wanted to win, but we’ll take that,” said Jones.
“It’s good for the mare getting the black type race under her belt and whatever she does from here I’m sure she’ll improve off again.”
