The Hong Kong Gold Cup is a Group 1 event held in Hong Kong at Sha Tin Racecourse over 2000m held annually in February.

Held a month after the Hong Kong Stewards’ Cup, the Hong Kong Gold Cup is the second leg of the famous Hong Kong Triple Crown.

• 2022: Russian Emperor leads home stable quinella
  The rise of Douglas Whyte among Hong Kong’s training ranks encompassed yet another milestone at Sha Tin as jockey Blake Shinn and Russian Emperor led home a one-two finish for the handler in the Group 1 Hong Kong Gold Cup (2000m). Just weeks after savouring Group 1 Centenary Sprint Cup (1200m) glory with Stronger – his first win at the top-level as a trainer – Whyte took it up a notch this afternoon, not least thanks to an accomplished ground-saving steer from Shinn. Savvy Nine filled second for Whyte – relishing the deteriorating ground and relentless rain under Matthew Chadwick, while Golden Sixty held third under Vincent Ho with Tourbillon Diamond finishing in fourth spot. Hong Kong’s all-time leader as a jockey with 1,813 wins, Whyte has enjoyed a seemingly swift rise to success as a handler – capped now by two top-level wins in under a month.
• 2021: Vincent Ho lifts Golden Sixty to 13th straight win
  Golden Sixty extended his unbeaten run to 13 straight wins with victory in the Hong Kong Gold Cup. However, Hong Kong’s highest rated horse was forced to spare no effort as he scrambled to add a third consecutive Group 1 to his glittering record, which now stands at 16 wins from 17 starts, four shy of Silent Witness’ record 17 consecutive wins. Dropped out to his customary position at the rear of the field, the Medaglia d’Oro gelding began his surge in the straight but the challenge from Furore on the inside required jockey Vincent Ho to call on everything that Golden Sixty could give and, it proved just enough in a time of 2:00.25 by a short head, the smallest margin of any of his wins.
• 2020: Time Warp produces massive upset
  Time Warp delivered a blast from the past to level hot favourite Exultant in a rip-roaring edition of the Hong Kong Gold Cup. Two years ago, in this very race, the Tony Cruz-trained chestnut became the first horse to dip below two minutes for the course and distance. Circumstances were much different this time around: a veteran of 32 Hong Kong racing starts, the seven-year-old lined up as an unconsidered 25/1 shot against his short-priced stablemate, having posted just one win in 16 runs since his 2018 Gold Cup success – and that had come in November of that same year. Exultant, Hong Kong’s standout champion at distances from 1800m to 2400m, was supposed to step up and claim a second successive Hong Kong Gold Cup. But when Joao Moreira was handed an easy lead on the strong-galloping Time Warp, Exultant’s task became a more difficult one, his rider Zac Purton having been forced to settle back from gate nine. Moreira would go on to drive his mount to a three-quarter-length win from the closing Exultant, to clock a race-winning time of 2:02.00.
• 2019: Exultant triumphant in Hong Kong Gold Cup
  The manner in which Exultant took control of the Group 1 Hong Kong Gold Cup at Sha Tin left no room for doubt that he is fully entitled to his official billing as Hong Kong’s second best horse behind the majestic Beauty Generation. The Tony Cruz-trained gelding entered the arena as the favourite little over half an hour after Beauty Generation’s latest show of strength and was bidding to emulate a Hong Kong hero of yesteryear in this HK$10 million contest. Ivan Allan’s Indigenous had been the last horse to win the Hong Kong Vase before stepping down in distance to land the Gold Cup but Exultant replicated his achievement thanks to a dashing ride from Zac Purton and his own deep reserves of stamina. Exultant quickened from a distant eighth to a freewheeling first in little over 200m as Purton asked him to sustain a long run for home soon after and the five-year-old galloped on relentlessly to pass the post a length and a half clear of the outsider Southern Legend as the pair drew clear of Dinozzo and Simply Brilliant.
• 2018: Time Warp grips on
  Time Warp set a merciless tempo to win the 2018 Group 1 Hong Kong Gold Cup at Sha Tin. After leading from the off under Zac Purton, the strapping chestnut was forced to go where no horse had gone before – inside two minutes over Sha Tin’s 2000 metres. The performance was one of raw courage from Time Warp and smart timing from Purton. The five-year-old went through the middle three sectionals in 23.35s, 23.39s and 23.32s, closing off a battling home stretch run in 24.23s. Werther took the fight to the winner through that final 400 metres. Hugh Bowman’s mount edged ahead with a furlong to race but Time Warp fought back, driving on to lower the track record to 1:59.97s. Jim And Tonic’s old course record of 2:00.10s had stood since April, 1999.
