Racing will return to Bathurst Racecourse this Monday, as it will host a competitive seven-race program. With good, warm weather forecast for the area over Sunday and Monday, we expect to be racing on the current track rating of a Good 4 for most of the day. The rail will be in the +2m position from the 1200m mark to the 350m, with the rest of the circuit in the True position.
The first race at Bathurst will jump at 1:15pm AEDT.
Best Bet at Bathurst: Salisano
The third race of the day will feature Salisano from the Bjorn Baker yard, who won very well on debut at Orange over 1000m on January 15. This three-year-old filly jumped well and sat outside the leader until the home turn, before kicking clear and running home a nice one length victor over Miss Boom Boom and Court Whispers. This daughter of Shalaa will have taken a lot out of her debut run and with four trials and one race under her belt, she should be at peak fitness. The step up to 1100m shouldn’t be a worry for this filly as she ran out the 1000m easily and was very strong through the line. We expect Mitchell Bell to push forward and take up the lead or sit outside the leader, much like last start, and if she travels and shows the turn of foot she showed on debut, she should be winning again.

Next Best at Bathurst: Astrolith
In the very next race we will be siding with the Dean Mirfin-trained Astrolith in the Country Championship Preview Class 4 Handicap, who will be looking for back-to-back wins and two wins from three starts this preparation. This four-year-old gelding has a very good career record, with three wins and four placings from nine starts, and this campaign could see him take the next step. Last start this son of Stratum Star had to lump 61kg over 1280m at Orange, but he was able to lead throughout to score by just under half a length. On Monday, he will drop in weight to 58kg and will only have to give the bottom weight in the race 3kg. Clayton Gallagher will jump aboard for his first ride on this gelding, but the fact that the stable have put an experienced jockey on for this start, says to us that he can win again. All three of the speed influences are from the Mirfin yard, so we expect to see the other two take up the lead from middle barriers and Gallagher should cross to sit in the one-one behind his stablemates.

Best Value at Bathurst: Rupertson
The penultimate event of the day will see Rupertson and Whataboutscotty meet again after they ran the quinella at this track over 1300m last start on January 24. However, on Monday we will be siding with the Ashlee Grives-trained Rupertson who finished second in that meeting, finishing fast to go down by just under a length. The winner got all the favours last start from barrier one and the box seat, whereas this four-year-old gelding was in behind horses and didn’t see clear air until the final 150m. This son of Winning Rupert has drawn a sticky barrier (13 of 14), but considering he likes to sit on-speed, we should see Mitchell Bell push forward and sit outside the leader. If Bell can get him outside the leader, he will have a couple of lengths head start on his biggest rivals and he should be able kick clear and give them something to chase.
