Gosford racing preview

What Gosford Races
Where The Entertainment Grounds – 4 Racecourse Rd, West Gosford NSW 2250
When Thursday, February 2, 2023
First Race 1:10pm AEDT

Racing heads to Gosford on Thursday afternoon for a tricky eight-race program kicking off at 1:10pm local time. The weather hasn’t been kind to NSW of late; however, we’re finally expecting some drying days across the region, so the Soft 6 currently listed for Thursday should only improve. The rail is in the true position the entire circuit, and with the short straight at Gosford we’ll be looking for gallopers more towards the speed.

Best Bet: Mister Hemsworth

We’ll be looking to get the best bet on the board nice and early on Thursday afternoon, as Mister Hemsworth looks to be peaking third-up for the Annabel Neasham yard. This lightly raced European import has had two starts since arriving in Australia and both have shown great improvement from this son of New Approach. We were particularly taken with his last start effort behind another progressive type – Buck’s Party – on January 7 at Wyong over the 1350m. The further in trip we see this five-year-old step to the better, as he seems a type that will appreciate getting to the mile based on what we saw. In this small field on Thursday it wouldn’t shock us to see jockey Brett Prebble take charge of this race from the front, stepping to lead and using some early speed to put them to bed early. Mister Hemsworth looks ready to win and we’re happy to make him the best bet.

Next Best: Boston City

We loved the return of Boston City first-up at Kembla Grange on January 21 and we think he can be winning in his second-up assignment. He found some trouble around the 300m marker in that race finishing a half-length off the winner, Time To Boogie, trying to get off the inside rail and checking off heels to do so. Once he did get clear, this son of Brazen Beau was hitting the line best, but he simply ran out of time to get the eventual winner. He’s much fitter for the run and finds himself stepping into a 1200m race that should suit him perfectly, particularly if Hollywood Hero elects to run at Canterbury on the Wednesday prior. Joshua Parr takes the reins for the first time and from a soft gate should only need to keep Boston City out of trouble late to be improving to win this time.

Best Value: Sundida

We’re interested in the debut of Sundida on Thursday afternoon and we’re willing to take a risk on this first starter, making her the best value for the card. She’s had just the one trial heading into this 1200m maiden; however, we liked what we saw from this daughter of Fighting Son on January 4 at Kembla Grange. Alysha Collett didn’t ask for much of an effort and finished nicely into third position behind Shalaa Magic. With no other guide we’re going to trust that she’s fit enough for this, as the Joseph Ible stable haven’t sent her back to the trials for any more official work. We’re going to use this as a positive indicator and hopefully Louise Day can find a spot from an awkward draw to give us a sight at each-way odds with online bookmakers.
