When Saturday, December 31, 2022
First Race 12:03pm AEST

The Doomben Racecourse will host the Magic Millions Prelude Raceday this Saturday, where the bumper nine-race card will feature the Group 3 Vo Rogue Plate and Listed Nudgee Stakes. The track is currently rated a Soft 5, however, with good weather on the forecast for Friday and Saturday, we should be on a Good track by race day. The rail will be in the +4m position for the entire circuit, which may prove to favourable to on-speed runners for most of the day.

The first race on Magic Millions Prelude Raceday will jump at 12:03pm AEST.

Vo Rogue Plate: Stroll

The Group 3 Vo Rogue Plate will feature a strong field of three-year-olds, who will battle it out over 1350m. The Steven O’Dea & Matthew Hoysted-trained Stroll looks to be hard to beat after she won the Listed Mode Stakes last start, beating the Queensland boom horse, Chinny Boom, by the barest of margins to record her second Listed victory of her career. This three-year-old filly will be racing third-up for the first time, but considering she looked to have more improvement to come at her most recent start, we have no problem tipping her here once again. Boris Thornton will stick with this girl after riding her to victory last start, and if this girl can out herself in a prominent position on-pace, she will be very hard to beat.

Nudgee Stakes: Kiku

The co-feature event will be the Listed Nudgee Stakes where a near-compacity field of 15 will clash over 1200m. Chris Waller will have his five-year-old mare, Kiku, returning from a spell to run in the Nudgee Stakes first-up, looking to keep her impressive fresh record intact. From five first-up runs, this mare has only missed the placings once, including a win preparation in the Group 2 Theo Marks Stakes over 1300m at Randwick on September 10. This daughter of Zoustar has won at Group 2 and Group 3 level throughout her career and she has won twice at the 1200m as well as finishing in the placings at all seven of her starts at the distance. James McDonald will take the ride on Saturday for the seventh time, looking to record his third win, and if she gets a good tempo up in front, she will be flying home late.

Best Bet at Doomben: Sunsource

Our best bet of the day will come up in the two-year-old handicap over 1200m, where the Trent Busuttin & Natalie Young-trained Sunsource, will be looking for back-to-back wins to begin his career. On debut, this son of Zoustar missed the jump by a couple of lengths so he settled at the rear of the field on the fence. However, just before the field got to the home corner, Daniel Moor pushed this guy up the fence through the field to be only three or four lengths off the leaders, and within 200m he had levelled up with the leader and gone straight on by, to record a very stylish debut victory at Ballarat on November 19. Post-race Daniel Moor suggested that this colt would take a lot out of his debut run, and if he jumps better on Saturday not having to give the leaders much of a start, he could prove that he is a very talented horse on the rise.

Next Best Bet at Doomben: Hold On Honey

In the first race of the day Hold On Honey will be looking fourth win in a row after completing a hattrick of wins last start at this track and trip on December 14. At his most recent start, this four-year-old gelding was very impressive as he jumped, led and kicked clear to win eased down over the final 100m recording an easy two-length victory. Now that he has put three on end and his confidence is sky-high, the step up in grade from Benchmark 70 to Saturday’s Benchmark 78 shouldn’t be too much of a problem for this talented galloper. Boris Thornton has ridden this son of Counterattack at all three of his wins this campaign and he will once again take the reigns for this next start. There looks to be a lot of speed in this race so if a couple of runners want to overdo out in front, this guy has the ability so sit in behind them and take a sit from barrier three.

Best Value Bet at Doomben: Lasting Kiss

A Benchmark 78 Handicap will be the fourth race of the day, and Lasting Kiss from the Stephen Lee yard will be looking to complete a hattrick of wins. At her last two starts this daughter of Real Impact won her race by small margins after sitting on-speed and showing a will to win in the final stages of the race. She will have to continue to improve on Saturday as she goes from country grade to metropolitan grade, albeit from open class to a Benchmark 78. From barrier 12, Kyle Wilson-Taylor will look to cross the field and sit on-speed, and if he can settle this mare in the first four, she will be very hard to get past.
