We head to Gosford Race Club on Thursday afternoon for what looks to be a competitive seven-race program. The rail is out +3m for the entire circuit, and we should be racing on a Soft 5 surface with some rain forecast across the region. We’ve got a tricky card to dissect with 103 acceptances over the seven races, so it’s a jam-packed program. Racing gets underway at 1:50pm AEDT.
Best Bet: Grebeni
Race three is a 1900m contest for Class 1 and maiden company, and we think Grebeni looks the progressive type moving forward here for Gerald Ryan and Sterling Alexiou. He comes here after an impressive win last start over the 1600m at Newcastle on December 3 when weaving his way between horses and looked untested over the mile. Stepping up to the 1900m only looks like a positive for this son of Ocean Park, and on breeding he should be holding his form on a wet track. Grebeni looks well placed to find back-to-back wins, and with James Innes Jnr electing to take the reins again, he seems to agree with our assessment. Look for Grebeni to sit somewhere midfield with cover before finding his way clear to score again.

Next Best: Shigeru
The Jason Deamer-trained Shigeru looks ready to break his maiden status in this 1600m contest in the second race on the card, as his consistency should be paying off. His three starts this prep have all found this son of Kobayashi running into minor money, and he has either found excuses or some nice opposition in each of those runs. His last-start effort was strong at Newcastle over the 1350m on December 17, and we like the confidence backing up this three-year-old in what looks a winnable maiden contest. The mile looks ideal and Koby Jennings should be looking to find a forward position as he did at Newcastle; however, this time he can go a couple of placings better.

Best Value: Amazing Nicci
We’re taking on the short-priced favourite in the penultimate with an each-way prospect in Amazing Nicci. This four-year-old mare from the Gary Portelli yard has been very consistent in her career with 13 starts for three wins and three more minor placings, and after what she produced first-up at Scone on December 9 she looks as though she’s holding her form nicely for this BM64 contest. Julia Presits rode this daughter of Nicconi first-up and sticks on here with a much-appreciated 3kg claim to bring the weight down to 56kg. If she can overcome barrier 13, you’ve got to respect her. We’d much rather take the price for her than the shorts for the one-win favourite, Field Wiri.
