What The Ingham Day
Where Royal Randwick Racecourse – Alison Rd, Randwick NSW 2031
When Saturday, December 10, 2022
First Race 12:20pm AEDT

Royal Randwick will host a massive 10-race Saturday program highlighted by The Ingham, where the winner will take home $1.15 million of the $2 million prize pool, as well as a ticket into the Group 1 Doncaster Handicap. The track is currently rated a Soft 5; however, with good weather in the area on Friday and Saturday, we should be on a Good track on raceday. The rail will be in the true position this weekend, which should give all runners a fair chance to win from any position. The first race of the day will kick off at 12:20pm AEDT.

Race 1: Class 3 Highway (1000m)

The first race of the day will feature a full field of 18 runners for the Class 3 Highway Handicap over 1000m, where we will be siding with the Matthew Dale-trained Pretty Woman. This four-year-old mare finished fourth when first-up from a seven-month spell, behind the race favourite on Saturday, Salire, but this time she meets the favourite much better at the weights, as she will drop 0.5kg and he goes up 3.5kg for that win. With the aid of Tyler Schiller’s 1.5kg claim, this mare will get even more weight relief and if she is made to travel in the three-wide running line from barrier 12 over 1000m, it shouldn’t hinder her chances. This daughter of Written Tycoon is currently $9 with online betting sites, and she is worth a bet in the opening race of the day.

Race 2: Benchmark 72 Midway Handicap (1600m)

Our next best bet of the day will come up in race two where Floating for the Matthew Smith yard drops back down to a Benchmark 72 from a Benchmark 78, where he finished fourth behind Mission Phoenix at Rosehill over 1800m. This son of Puissance De Lune has won two of his last four starts, with the last win over 1600m at Newcastle being the better of the two, when he smashed the field by 3.5 lengths eased down on November 12. Rachel King will take the ride on this four-year-old gelding again, after riding him last start, and now that she knows the horse better and he drops in grade to a more suitable race, we should be seeing this guy win again.

Race 3: Benchmark 72 Handicap (1100m)

The Benchmark 72 Handicap will kick off the early quaddie and a full field of 16 runners will do battle over 1100m. Our top pick for the race will be the Chris Waller-trained Sacrimony who finished his race very well over 1000m last start, beaten by just under a length by Quick Tempo at Kembla Grange on November 19. This son of Per Incanto will be second-up on Saturday and he will be trying to keep his 100% win-rate second-up, after winning his first two starts when second up throughout his career. Dylan Gibbons will take the ride on Saturday and with the aid of his 2kg claim, he will only have to carry 57.5kg, meaning that he is very well in at the weights for this race.

Race 4: Listed Christmas Cup (2400m)

The Listed Christmas Cup over 2400m will be the first of three Listed races for the day. Gregory Hickman will have his five-year-old gelding, Rondino, engaged as he tries to record his seventh win at his 19th career start. Last start on November 26 at Rosehill, he clashed with many of his rivals that he will see again on Saturday in the Listed ATC Cup, however, this gelding didn’t get much luck at all in the final 400m. This son of Shamus Award tried to make three different runs in the home straight and his run got blocked every time as he went over the finish line hard held behind a line of horses, finishing fifth by 1.5 lengths. From barrier 10 on Saturday, Tyler Schiller should find a similar position back in the field, but he won’t be on the rail. This guy will be building momentum down the outside on the home turn, and with an inch of luck, he should be winning.

Selections:

Race 5: Listed Nursery (1000m)

The Listed Nursery worth $500,000 for two-year-olds, will have seven of the 13 runners making their debut on Saturday. The un-raced, Facile, from the Gerald Ryan & Sterling Alexiou yard has the best trial form of the debutants, however, we will be siding with the Gary Portelli-trained Tango Fever who ran second on debut at the Gold Coast over 1100m on November 26. This two-year-old filly was very good when she charged home late and just missed by a head on the line. The drop back to 1000m from 1100m could be a negative, but with race experience on her side and a lot of speed expected, this race could set up perfectly for her. At $23 with online bookmakers, she looks to be well overs in a very competitive race.

  • silks8

    FACILE

  • silks12

    SALTAIRE

  • silks6

Race 6: Benchmark 88 Handicap (1200m)

In the Benchmark 88 Handicap, we will be siding with the Kris Lees-trained Per Inaway, who was too bad to be true first-up over 1200m at Rosehill on November 26, where he was settled at the back of the field, for the first time in her career and it just didn’t work out. On Saturday she will have 53.5kg so we should see this four-year-old mare jump, go to the front to lead this field, which should suit this girl better and we should see a much better performance. The race favourite, Authentic Jewel, will be hardest beat and she will settle on speed as well, so we could have a ding-dong battle down the straight between two talented gallopers.

Selections:

  • silks8

    PER INAWAY

  • silks4

    AUTHENTIC JEWEL

  • silks7

    KIR ROYALE

Race 7: Listed Razor Sharp Handicap (1200m)

Our best bet of the day will come up in the Listed Razor Sharp Handicap over 1200m, where the very talented five-year-old gelding from the John O’Shea yard, Waihaha Falls, looks to have found a very nice to gain some black-type. At his last start over 1300m at Newcastle, this gelding had to carry a massive 61.5kg as the top weight and it looked as though the big weight was the ultimate reason why he didn’t let down with that customary turn of foot. First-up this campaign, this son of Sacred Falls had no luck at all as he picked his way through the pack to finish fourth in the Group 3 Sydney Stakes over 1200m. On Saturday, this guy will only have 54.5kg and if he brings his Sydney Stakes form to this Listed race, he will only need even luck to win this race.

Race 8: The Ingham (1600m)

The time-honoured Group 2 The Ingham will be run and won on Saturday, with the winner earning themselves a free ticket into the Group 1 Doncaster Handicap in the autumn. The race favourite with online bookmakers is also the second emergency, with Nugget from the Ciaron Maher & David Eustace yard opening as the $3.60 favourite, followed by Huetor ($6) and Brutality ($8).

Race 9: Benchmark 88 Handicap (1600m)

In the penultimate race of the day, the race favourite and our top selection will be the Ciaron Maher & David Eustace-trained Nugget, who is also accepted for The Ingham, but he is the second emergency. As the second emergency for feature race there is every chance that he doesn’t get a start and he will run in the Benchmark 88 Handicap over 1600m a race later, where he is an odds-on favourite in early markets. This son of Siyouni should be too good for this Benchmark 88 field, so if he doesn’t gain a start in the Group 2, he should be winning this race, even with 61kg on his back.

Race 10: Benchmark 78 Handicap (1400m)

In the last race of the day, we will be looking for the blue army to end our day with a bang. We will be siding with the James Cummings-trained Kanazawa, who will be second-up after finishing eighth at Kembla Grange over 1200m on November 19, after he got too far back. Zac Lloyd will stick with this four-year-old gelding as he rises to the 1400m and with the aid of his 2kg claim, this guy will only carry 55kg (1kg above the minimum). With more speed engaged in this race on Saturday, there should be more of an opportunity for him to run-on and let down with that turn of foot that he possesses.
