On Wednesday afternoon we go to Sandown for an eight-race twilight program on the Hillside track. The track is currently rated a Good 4, which should stay put given the promising forecast for Tuesday onwards. The rail will be in the 11m position for the entire circuit, which historically favours on-speed runners and leaders. The first race will kick off at 3:40pm AEDT.
SANDOWN BEST BET: Riverplate
In the Class 1 Handicap over 1400m for race three, we will be siding with the Trent Busuttin & Natalie Young-trained Riverplate, who recorded an easy 3.75-length victory last start at this track and trip. This son of Flying Artie came over from New Zealand earlier this year with very good form, even though he was a maiden who had recorded four placings from eight starts. Last start over 1400m, this guy was heavily backed first-up when returning from a five-month spell and he duly saluted by leading from barrier to post while being eased down in the final 50m. This gelding clearly has above-average ability, and now that he has broken his maiden, we expect him to only get better and more confident.

NEXT BEST AT SANDOWN: St Lawrence
In the fourth race of the day, the Ciaron Maher & David Eustace-trained St Lawrence will return from a two-month spell with the benefit of one jump-out at Ararat on November 7 over 1000m. This lightly raced four-year-old gelding has won both of his career starts to date, with his debut coming at Hastings in New Zealand before being sent to Australia, where he won his second start at Geelong over 1325m on September 15. This son of Redwood was very tough at his only Australian start when he sat on pace for the entirety of the 1325m, and when he got headed by the horse on his outside, he really picked up under Mark Zahra and fought back to record an impressive one-length victory as a $1.60 favourite. John Allen should be able to sit outside the leader from barrier four, and if they don’t go hard up in front, he will be very hard to get past in the concluding stages.

SANDOWN VALUE BET: Cortes
In the second race, we will be siding with the Robbie Griffiths & Mathew de Kock-trained Cortes, who is coming off a very nice debut run at Moonee Valley on November 18 over 1200m. This son of Pariah ran third on debut behind Holly Lolly and Private Jumbo, who gapped the field and fought the finish out between them, but this colt beat the rest of the field comfortably. This three-year-old colt sat behind the leaders on debut and looked a little bit lost when the speed went on and lost a few lengths, before picking up and taking ground off them over the final 100m. From barrier 14 on Wednesday, this guy won’t get all the favours in the running, like he did last start, and he may have to do some work to get on-speed, but if Patrick Moloney can get him across to the front and give a kick on the home bend, he could be hard to run down in the concluding stages.
