What Sale Cup Day
Where Sale Turf Club – 1227 Maffra-Sale Rd, Sale VIC 3850
When Sunday, October 23, 2022
First Race 12:45pm AEDT

The Sale Turf Club will this weekend hold its annual Cup Day, where a very competitive nine-race card is highlighted by the $200,000 Listed Sale Cup. The track is currently rated as a Soft 5, but there is a lot of rain on the way for Victoria on Friday and Saturday, so we expect to be presented with a much more rain-affected track come race day. The rail will go back into the true position for the entire course, with Sale Cup Day kicking off at 12:45pm AEDT.

Sale Cup Tip: White Noise

In the feature race of the day, the $200,000 Listed Sale Cup, Andrew Forsman will be looking to win another Victorian feature race with his newest addition to his contingent, White Noise, who looks very hard to beat. This four-year-old gelding was in Australia earlier this year when he ran in the Group 2 Tulloch Stakes and Group 1 ATC Oaks in New South Wales in March and April of this year. However, those races didn’t pan out for this son of El Roca as he finished seventh and 15th in those two races, respectively. However, this current preparation for this guy has been very good, winning over 1400m at Te Rapa and running second at Matamata over 1600m in the Listed Matamata Cup, after being trapped three-wide the trip. Dean Holland will take the ride on this gelding and from barrier three he should lob in the one-one where he will be very strong in the concluding stages as he looks to record win six at start number 15.

Best Bet: Dusse

In the Benchmark 64 Handicap over 1000m, the Ciaron Maher & David Eustace-trained Dusse, will return from a four month spell after running in the Next Gen Sprinters Series at Flemington on June 4. This lightly race three-year-old filly competed in some very nice races throughout her two-year-old season recording a win and two minor placings, finishing behind two smart ones, Bubble Palace and Ghaanati. This daughter of Rubick has had two quiet trials to get her fit for this first-up assignment, with her most recent trial at Cranbourne over 800m showing good signs that she is ready to go as she went to the line hard held finishing third in the trial. Ethan Brown will push her out of the barriers and look for the lead or sit just outside the leader and be very hard to get past late.

Next Best Bet: Tiz My Bay

One of the more interesting runners on the Sale Cup Day card is the Robbie Griffiths & Mathew de Kock-trained Tiz My Bay who will return from an 11 month spell after contesting the Group 1 VRC Oaks during the Spring Carnival last year. Although this four-year-old mare is still a maiden, she ran in races of much higher grade than the race she will contest on Sunday, including the Group 2 Wakeful Stakes, Group 3 Ethereal Stakes and the Group 1 VRC Oaks, where she was beaten but not disgraced. There looks to be plenty of speed in the race, which will be perfect for this daughter of Cable Bay who will be out the back and running home strongly down the outside in the straight as she looks to break her maiden.

Next Best Bet

Race 2 – Baranof silks#14 Tiz My Bay (8)

4yo Mare | T: Robbie Griffiths & Mathew de Kock | J: Patrick Maloney (57.5kg)

$5.50 with Bet365

Best Value: La Zucca

The Lyn Tolsen & Leonie Proctor-trained La Zucca started off this preparation with two very impressive wins at Geelong and Mornington, before she stepped up in grade and went to town, where she was well beaten. In her most recent start this five-year-old mare stuck on well for third behind Airclash at Mornington over 1200m carrying 60kg. On Sunday, she will step up slightly in grade to a Benchmark 70, but will drop 3kg, and if the race is run at a genuine tempo, we think that this daughter of Unencumbered will be hard to beat with any luck in running.

Best Value

Race 9 – Baranof silks#13 La Zucca (10)

5yo Mare | T: Lyn Tolsen & Leonie Proctor | J: Matthew Cartwright (57kg)
