A Very Fine Red has taken out the Listed Alinghi Stakes over 1100m, getting the better of Shalstar in a very tight photo and beating home Melba Storm who ran home nicely into third place.

The money came for this Mark Newnham-trained mare as she was backed into be second favourite at $5 with online bookmakers before they jumped.

Josh Parr has chalked up a double for the day on A Very Fine Red after winning the Ethereal Stakes on Renaissance Woman earlier in the day.

2022 Alinghi Stakes Replay

Mark Newnham’s stable foreman, Aaron Lowe, spoke after their win in the Listed Alinghi Stakes with A Very Fine Red.

“Absolutely, she really deserved it today, I think this last year she came within a stride of winning a Stakes race,” said Lowe who was very happy with the win in the Alinghi Stakes.

“It’s just about getting her back in form and she needed that run first-up the other day.

“A brilliant move by Mark (Newnham) putting the blinkers back on, but it was a good ride by Josh (Parr).

“There’s a race for her in a couple of week on Derby Day where she might go to.” Aaron Lowe suggested that A Very Fine Red may race one more time in the spring before heading to the paddock.

Josh Parr bought up a double Caulfield and he looks to have his eye-in with the big ride on Duais in the Caulfield Cup.

“Thankfully we were the stronger combo on the line,” Parr replied when asked if he thought his mare had done enough to win in the photo finish.

“She was in a fight for the length of the straight and she’s been able to stick her head out on the line and win.

“She’s been unlucky twice at black-type level, so it’s very important for her to win at this level. I’m thrilled to get the job done.”

A Very Fine Red will most likely go to the Furphy Sprint for mares on Derby Day on October 29.
