It is Caulfield Guineas Day on Saturday afternoon – one of the best meetings on the Australian racing calendar. The Group 1 Caulfield Guineas (1600m) headlines the program, the Might And Power Stakes (2000m) looms as an entrée to the Cox Plate in a fortnight, and the Toorak Handicap (1600m) will also be run and won at Caulfield. Early in the week the track is a Good 3, but with plenty of rain forecast on Friday we expect to be racing on a Soft 6 or 7 come race day. The rail returns to the true position, with the first of 10 races set to go at 12:15pm AEDT.

Race 1: Debutant Stakes (1000m)
The traditional opener to Guineas Day the Debutant Stakes will get us underway at ‘The Heath’ where a field of seven two-year-old’s look to bring up a black-type win on debut. With no firm opinion, we are happy to side with the Simon Zahra-trained Shesallshenanigans who impressed at her second Flemington jumpout on September 30 when leading throughout. She draws barrier three and should control the race from out in front and as always a juvenile being close to the rail should be a massive plus.

Race 2: Weekend Hussler Stakes (1400m)
Grahame Begg has dreams of taking Cardinal Gem to a Stradbroke Handicap next year and we expect he will pick up the Weekend Hussler on his way to that Group 1 dream. The four-year-old relished the Heavy 10 going at Flemington on September 18 and put 2.5-lengths on a genuine mudlark. He has been nothing short of impressive this campaign, with two wins and four minor placings from seven starts and looks primed to pick up his first Stakes win on Saturday. Jordan Childs will have this bloke settled midfield with cover and Imperial Lad and Open Minded set to make this a genuinely run 1400m, we expect Cardinal Gem to relish the wet track and flash home late on.

Race 3: Thoroughbred Club Stakes (1200m)
The Group 3 Thoroughbred Club Stakes is as an open event as you will see anywhere in the country on Saturday. We have settled on the Mick Price & Michael Kent Jnr-trained Wee Nessy who has won twice at weaker campaign this campaign, with her only failure coming when defeated 1.5 lengths to Nanagui in the Listed Cap D’Antibes Stakes at Flemington. She meets that runner again on Saturday, but drawn barrier three, this Snitzel filly should gain every favour in running and gains the services of James McDonald. Both career wins have come on rain-affected going so we know she will handle the going and at $12 with Palmerbet, Wee Nessy looks to be a great value play in the Thoroughbred Club Stakes.

Race 4: Caulfield Village Stakes (1200m)
One of our better bets of the day Zethus is scheduled to step out in the Listed Caulfield Village Stakes and if he repeats the effort that saw him salute over Clemenceau at Moonee Valley, he should be hard out beat. Despite drawing out wide in barrier 14, Jamie Kah should have no issue in lobbing this bloke midfield with cover and in doing so should gain a great tow into the race. He produced a stunning turn of foot to get the better of a smart rival last time out and with a few of these struggling or coming to the event first-up from a spell we expect Zethus should be the one finishing off the best and salute at a nice price.

Race 5: Herbert Power Stakes (2400m)
Win and you are in to Saturday weeks Caulfield Cup, that is what is on offer for the winner of the 2022 Herbert Power Stakes. Persan is already assured of a run in the feature on October 15, but we expect he will take out this Group 3 event based on what we saw in the JRA Cup at Moonee Valley on September 23. Having settled midfield on a night where it was advantageous to be on-speed, Persan was taking ground off the likes of Desert Icon and Nerve Not Verve over the 2040m. He steps up to the 2400m third-up a trip which is much more suitable and under Damian Lane looks the one to be with. Point Nepean, Desert Icon and Good Idea will all make this a genuine staying event and with a bit of class on his side we expect Persan to be the one finishing the best. The $8.50 with Ladbrokes looks a great price to take on.

Race 6: Schillachi Stakes (1100m)
Our best bet of the day comes up in the Group 2 Schillachi Stakes when the James Cummings-trained Paulele looks to make amends for a poor showing in the Moir Stakes. It was a night to be up on speed at The Valley but did manage to get warm nicely late on to suggest the 1100m he gets on Saturday should suit him perfectly. He has a more than serviceable wet track record of 9: 2-2-2 and with two wins and two minor placing at the trip he looks the one to beat. Paulele is clearly the class sprinter of the field and with JMac on board, Paulele should be far too superior for his rivals in the Schillachi.

Race 7: Might And Power Stakes (2000m)
It may be Caulfield Guineas Day, but the Group 1 Might And Power Stakes is arguably the best race of the day. Superstar Godolphin runner Anamoe ($2.35) heads the market, whilst Zaaki ($4.60) and I’m Thunderstruck ($6.50) will be looking to bounce back from poor showings in the Underwood Stakes when they come up against Alligator Blood ($8) once again on Saturday. It looks to be a mini Cox Plate, let’s hope it lives up to the expectations.

Race 8: Caulfield Guineas (1600m)
Many a superstar stallion has won the Group 1 Caulfield Guineas and a capacity field of 16 three-year-old colts and geldings will duke it out for the $3 million on offer. Godolphin’s Golden Mile ($3) heads the markets with online bookmakers, whilst the Dan O’Sullivan-trained Berkeley Square ($5.50) looks to be the main danger but there looks to be plenty of chances in the 2022 edition.

Race 9: Toorak Handicap (1600m)
The Toorak Handicap was taken out by I’m Thunderstruck last year and the Peter Moody-trained I Wish I Win looks to be following a near identical pathway to what Thunder has done. He is a $2.70 favourite for this years event, with Tuvalu ($8) and Military Expert ($9.50) the only other runner at a single figure quote with Neds.

Race 10: Northwood Plume Stakes (1200m)
We will be looking to bow out on Saturday with Chassis at a big price. The six-year-old mare was scratched from Randwick last weekend and daved for another day and looks to gain plenty of favours in running. Drawn barrier two, Teo Nugent should have this girl lobbed on the heels of the leaders throughout this 1200m event and with three wins and two minor placings on rain-affected ground, we expect she will handle conditions at Caulfield. She improves with a run under her belt, but at a nice each-way price first-up from a spell, it is hard to go past Chassis in the Northwood Plume Stakes.
