A 1pm start awaits participants at Echuca on Thursday with racing to be performed on a predicted Heavy 9 surface. The popular quaddie kicks off at 3pm, with the last of eight races starting at 4:30pm, a race which sees one of our better bets going around.
Best Bet at Echuca – Funnyifitwon
Funnyiftwon, the son of Starcraft/Humorous Bet did enough on debut when second at Warracknabeal on a Soft 7 surface. Patrick Payne and Billy Egan combine and from barrier 19 Egan will have to make a decision early, but this isn’t an overly strong maiden and we think this gelding can overcome the tricky draw. Since his debut on July 25 he has trialed fairly on Soft ground (August 9) and that should have primed him up nicely for this event. Three of the five emergencies in this race could have big chances, numbers 17, 18 and 19 so we will have to keep an eye on the scratchings and see if they gain a run. With a big field size, we expect the pace to be on and Egan to settle back of midfield.

Next Best at Echuca – Mennea
Barrier one will help Mennea in this BM68 race over the 1400m. He was spelled for over a year before putting in a very good performance first up when running second after getting beaten a nose. That run should help his confidence and from barrier one Harry Coffey should give him a good run in transit. At Mildura he settled in the back half of the field before unleashing a strong run to the line over 1200m so we think the extra 200m will suit here. A Heavy 9 track is a bit of an unknown, but he did run second in a jumpout on the same ground two months back.

Race 8 – #3 Mennea (1)
4yo Gelding | T: Ciaron Maher & David Eustace | J: Harry Coffey (59.5kg)

Best Value at Echuca – Waitapu
Five races in 70 days suggest we are dealing with a very fit horse here. Waitapu raced on a similar surface (Heavy 8) at Cranbourne last start and ran on quite well for fourth so we are confident that he can produce something similar in a race that is of similar standard. He ran on well on June 22 and scored a win on a Heavy 9 so despite his form not being super strong, we think the conditions are the key in this. He will settle around midfield or slightly worse and should start to work home nicely for Daniel Moor over the last 200m.
