We round out another season of racing when the Bendigo Jockey Club hosts a competitive eight-race card on Sunday afternoon. With plenty of rain in the area in the lead-up to the meeting, we look set to be racing on a Heavy 10, with the rail out 9m for the entire circuit. In recent times, Bendigo has raced fairly, and there are no indications why Sunday should be any different. Racing gets underway at 12:05pm AEST at ‘The Nursery of Champions’.
Best Bet at Bendigo – Shalily
The fact that the Danny O’Brien-trained Shalily is still a maiden is laughable, and what is even more ludicrous is that $2.50 is on offer with online bookmakers for her on Sunday. The three-year-old filly went within 1.3 lengths of defeating Lady Adelaide at Sandown on July 6 and finished under a length off subsequent winner Delicious Tycoon in the process. Those types of form lines stack up ridiculously well in a maiden like this, and with Damien Oliver on board she simply rates perfectly. From the wide draw, look for Ollie to use the filly’s early speed to his advantage and have her settled outside the race leader throughout. If she is anywhere near her recent form, Shalily should have a bit too much class on her rivals in this.

Next Best at Bendigo – Shadoway Drive
Following consecutive runner-up efforts to begin this campaign, the Gwenda Johnstone-trained Shadoway Drive gets her chance to break her maiden at start five. The four-year-old mare was forced to travel three wide with no cover at Warracknabeal on July 4, so she did well to stick on and get beaten by under a half-length. From barrier two on Sunday, getting trapped wide should not be an issue, and with little to no other early speed factors in the race, we anticipate Jack Hill will take up the running. With race fitness on her side coming to this third-up, we expect Shadoway Drive will kick clear in the home straight and prove too hard to run down.

Best Value at Bendigo – Tycoon Bucks
The Andrew Noblet-trained Tycoon Bucks returns from a nine-month spell, and considering her best results have come on rain-affected going, we are willing to be with her in the second leg of the quaddie. The five-year-old mare has just one win from 16 starts but continually puts in an eye-catching run. With plenty of early speed engaged in this 1100m event, the race looks perfectly set-up for a fresh Tycoon Bucks to settle in the second half of the field and charge home down the centre of the track. With $23 available on several of the top betting sites, we’re happy to side with Tycoon Bucks on an each-way basis.
