What Echcua Races
Where Echuca Racecourse – Scott Rd, Echuca VIC 3564
When Friday, July 29, 2022
First Race 11:55am AEST

A massive nine-race card is scheduled for Echuca Racecourse on Friday afternoon, where punters can sink their teeth into a competitive meeting to round out the working week. With persistent rain throughout Victoria, we will be racing on a track rated a Soft 7, with the rail in the true position for the entire circuit. The first race is set to jump at 11:55am AEST, with the quaddie getting underway at 2:45pm AEST.

Best Bet at Echuca – On Bail

Our best bet of the day comes up in the second leg of the quaddie, where the Peter & Paul Snowden-trained On Bail will look to make amends following a horror watch at Hawkesbury last time out. The three-year-old ran into more traffic than peak hour on the Monash, and with clear air in running he arguably would have won. He instead needed to settle for a third-place finish, beaten 1.5 lengths in the end. He draws barrier nine in this BM64, so look for Beau Mertens to be aggressive early from the sticky gate and have this bloke settled outside the leader or in the one-one to avoid traffic issues. The Turn Me Loose gelding strung together a couple of nice wins last campaign in NSW, and with this being a touch easier than the races he has been competitive in, we expect On Bail to have a bit too much class for this lot. The double-figure odds are way overs.

Next Best at Echuca – Gusmao

We were the Mitch Freedman-trained Gusmao when the three-year-old gelding was a drifting favourite with bookmakers at Ballarat on July 10 and ran into one better inside the final 100m. The run screamed out that a maiden win was not too far away, and we expect that will occur on Friday. Having put a three-length margin on King Of Swing back in third last time out, Gusmao clearly has what it takes to win a race like this. He showed his tactical versatility in that run, too; usually a backmarker, he took up a more prominent role in running when settling third. From barrier 14, Tahlia Hope will have the option to go forward, but with enough speed in the race, look for her to have Gusmao settled at the rear and charging home late.

Best Value at Echuca – Snowbella

In the opening leg of the quaddie, we are hoping popular trainer Mitch Beer can leave Echuca a winner when Snowbella steps out over 1300m. The four-year-old mare was below her best at Albury on July 12, but outside of that effort, her record on rain-affected going is near bombproof. With a record of 9: 4-3-0 on wet ground, the Soft 7 conditions are sure to play in her favour, and with Fiona Sandkuhl retaining the ride with her 3kg claim, going around with just 57kg on her back will only aid this horse’s chances of winning. The daughter of So You Think has more than enough early speed to overcome barrier 12, and if the young apprentice can get into the one-one or in the moving line with cover at worst, Snowbella looks a great bet at big odds.
