We head to Murray River country on Friday afternoon for Mildura Cup Day. Last year’s winner of the Mildura Cup, Sierra Sue, went on to Group 1 glory in the Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes, so there will be plenty of connections who will be hoping Friday’s race is a springboard to greatness.
The meeting is set to be run on a Soft 5, with the rail in the true position throughout. As always at Mildura, the track should play fairly all day. Racing is set to get underway at 12:05pm AEST.
Mildura Cup Top Tip – Adelaide Ace
The Lindsey Smith-trained Adelaide Ace flew home for second in the Swan Hill Cup last time out, and we anticipate he can go one better in the Mildura Cup and pick up the majority of the $100,000 on offer. The five-year-old gelding has been racing in arguably harder races than what he faces on Friday, and outside of the proven Group qualities that top weight Cherry Tortoni possesses, Adelaide Ace looks the play in the Mildura Cup. He split the likes of Flash Aah and Poland earlier in his campaign and has since chased home the likes of Bermadez and D’augilar to suggest he is right in this. From barrier eight, look for Jarrod Fry to have him settled just a touch worse than midfield. With a 7.5kg weight advantage on Cherry Tortoni, we expect Adelaide Ace will sprint the better and ultimately take home the Mildura Cup.

Best Bet at Mildura – Marcolt
Marcolt is the definition of a frustrating horse to back, but Friday looks to be the day he breaks a seven-month drought. The four-year-old gelding worked home nicely with great intent at Bendigo on July 14 and did well to go down by only 1.75 lengths to the consistent Crackerjack Prince. He has shown throughout his career he can be tactically versatile. From barrier two under Billy Egan, look for the in-form hoop to have this bloke lobbed in a handy position throughout the 2000m event. Despite having duck eggs from four starts at the trip, Marcolt has shown enough this campaign to suggest he will handle the rise in trip with aplomb. We may not get too big a price with online bookmakers for the Reliable Man gelding, but he should prove too hard to hold out in the opening leg of the quaddie.

Next Best at Mildura – In Her Stride
The John Salanitri-trained In Her Stride is low flying at the moment, and we are hoping her impressive form continues when she returns to Mildura. The three-year-old filly managed to get the job done over 1000m at the track on April 26 and has gone on to win two of her three subsequent starts. Her win at Donald on June 26 showed she enjoys getting her toe into the ground. Despite drawing barrier 12, she looks set to lob in the one-one under Dean Holland and enjoy another perfect run in transit. If the Stratum Star filly is afforded that luxury, we anticipate she will put a race like this away in a couple of strides.
