When Friday, July 8, 2022
First Race 1pm AEST

Racing returns to the Sale Turf Club on Friday afternoon with a competitive little eight-race card. With showers forecast for race day, we look set to remain on a Soft 5 throughout the meeting, as is usually the case at these types of meetings. With the rail out 8m for the entire circuit, it may pay dividends to be close to the speed on the day. Racing is set to get underway at 1pm AEST.

Best Bet at Sale – Wegobam

We need to wait until the final race of the day for our best bet, when the Leon & Troy Corstens-trained Wegobam steps out over the 1429m. The four-year-old mare resumed with a third at Bendigo on June 19 on a Heavy 8 over 1100m, so we expect the extra 300m on Friday will suit her nicely. She was doing her best work late last time out, and considering she has a win and two minor placings from four second-up runs, she looks the one to beat. With a want to settle in the second half of the field, barrier 11 is no hinderance to her chances as she looks to build through her gears and flash home late. If she is within striking distance on the home turn, then Wegobam should prove too hard to hold out.

Next Best at Sale – I’m Innocent

The Rachael Cunningham-trained I’m Innocent was essentially a good thing beaten on the Pakenham synthetic on June 21 when narrowly defeated by He’s Essential. The three-year-old gelding hardly saw clear air when finishing second on that day, and with a fairer run in the home straight, he probably would have won. He jumps from barrier one on Friday, so at one point or another Thomas Stockdale will need a bit of luck in an attempt to break this guy’s maiden at start three. Look for the pair to use the low draw to their favour and stalk the speed throughout. If I’m Innocent avoids traffic in the home straight, he has a turn of foot that his rivals may not be able to match.

Best Value at Sale – Cantina

Online bookmakers are giving us great odds about Cantina from the Brian McGrath yard. The three-year-old resumed in a Fillies & Mares BM64 when finishing second on Heavy ground at Bendigo. If we get a bit of a firmer track, the Palentino filly is sure to appreciate the going, considering her sole career win came on a Good 3. It is hard to fault her racing pattern these days, as she looks to settle in the first four, and from barrier three, we expect Teo Nugent will look to take up the running and give his rivals something to chase. If he is afforded that luxury and can gain a cheap sectional, Cantina will take a power of gunning down in the opening leg of the quaddie.

Best Value

Race 5 – Silk #10 Cantina (3)

3yo Filly | T: Brian McGrath | J: Teo Nugent (57kg)
