The 2022 Australasian Oaks officially kickstarts the Adelaide Racing Carnival this Saturday afternoon at Morphettville, with $502,250 on the line for the 2000m staying event for the three-year-old fillies.
It looks to be an open race according to online bookmakers, with last-start Auraria Stakes winner My Whisper ($5) leading the market, whilst Australian Oaks winner El Patroness ($7.50) will be looking to become the first horse to complete the ATC/Australasian Oaks double. Daisies ($8) and Mac ‘N’ Cheese ($9.50) round out the runners in single figures.
From barrier one, we expect Ancient Girl to lead the field up, whilst proven Group class runners El Patroness and Barb Raider will be the ones stalking the speed throughout. Race favourite My Whisper will be looking to use barrier three to her advantage and find a spot midfield in the moving line, whilst Mac ‘N’ Cheese will look to settle at the rear of the field and be the one charging home late.

Form lines do not read much better than the one the Danny O’Brien-trained El Patroness brings to the Australasian Oaks. Having gained a perfect run in transit, the Shamus Award filly quickened nicely and put a big gap on a field arguably much harder than what she faces on Saturday. She draws barrier eight and, with John Allen on board, is more than likely going to land in the one-one throughout. The 2000m will not be an issue considering how easy she saw out the 2400m at Randwick, especially considering this is set be a genuinely run 2000m race. We’re more than happy to take the $7.50 on offer for the last-start Group 1 winner.
There is little doubt that the biggest threat to El Patroness’ chances is the Peter & Paul Snowden-trained My Whisper. Having strung together four-straight wins this campaign, including an impressive win in the Auraria Stakes on April 9, she now gets her chance at Group 1 level. Having settled towards the rear of the field when three wide with no cover, it was a remarkable effort for the Frankel filly to still be doing her best late over 1800m. Naturally the concern is whether she sees out a genuinely run 2000m event against a stronger field, but from barrier three under the urgings of Jamie Kah, she is a deserving favourite.
Cases can be made for the likes of Bon’s A Pearla, Mac ‘N’ Cheese and even Barb Raider at a nice each-way price, but the top two in the market clearly look the ones to beat in the 2022 Australasian Oaks.
