Longtime NZB administrator calls time

After nearly 22 years helping facilitate the trading of standardbreds, Rachel Deegan admits she’ll “miss the people but it’s time for a change.”

Her job as standardbred administrator for NZB Standardbred is currently being advertised, with Deegan taking up her new role as office manager at Rangiora Equine Services in North Canterbury early next month.

“It’s been a great job and the best part is the people,” she says, “there are a lot more nice ones than not so nice ones! I’ll miss the people but it’s time for a change.”

A Southlander originally, Deegan’s more than two decades in the industry started off at PGG before it morphed into PGG Wrightson and then NZB Standardbred. She’s literally overseen the sale of thousands of horses in her time.

While she’s been in Christchurch her successor can be based either there or Auckland.

Much of her job is managing logistics to ensure the NZB Standardbred National Standardbred Yearling and Weanling Sales at Karaka and Christchurch go smoothly.

“Most of our income comes in just a few days ..my job is all about organisation, buyer registrations, it’s money coming in and it’s money going out.”

And if she had to pick any highlights?

“Before Covid we used to meet clients in Australia… we used to go Perth, Melbourne, Sydney – it was great fun.”

“And I’d say the other highlight is seeing people at the sales buy a horse and then going to the races and seeing that horse win and just how excited people get.”
