Doomben plays host to nine metropolitan races on Saturday, April 9, with a number of really nice horses set to go around. HorseBetting’s Queensland racing analyst presents his best bets and quaddie numbers for the program, which is set to start at 11:48am AEST. The track is slowly drying after receiving a lot of rain over the past fortnight, so it is expected to race as a Soft 5, while the rail is out 3m for the entirety of the course. Our best bet comes up in the opening race of the day, where a short-priced favourite looks very hard to beat.
Best Bet at Doomben – Nettuno
The $1.55 on offer with most online bookmakers is short, we know, but we are extremely confident that this colt simply wins. The Tony Gollan-trained two-year-old was ultra-impressive on debut at the Sunshine Coast on March 20, bounding away on a Heavy 8 to win by 4.5 lengths over 1000m on the back of two nice trials. The colt by I Am Invincible now looks to bring that winning form to metropolitan level, while he also rises to 1200m, but we cannot see that being an issue. From barrier eight, Ryan Maloney will take the top-weight straight to the front once again, and it should be as simple as that. It’s the short way home in the opener, but it’s an easy way to start your day off on a winning note.
Next Best at Doomben – Aidensfield
Admittedly, we are still trying to work out how Smart Image returned to form like he did a fortnight ago when winning like Chautauqua at this track and distance, defeating Aidensfield by two and a half lengths, but that’s the Tony Gollan touch we suppose. Aidensfield is now lining up in her third start for Desleigh Forster in Queensland, where she is looking to break through for a win after finishing second in her two runs in Brisbane. The four-year-old mare by Dissident was super first-up behind Osamu and then would not have seen which way Smart Image went on March 26, but she held the rest of the field at bay pretty comfortably. Samantha Collett returns to the saddle on Saturday and she rises to 58.5kg, but the race should set up nicely for her to be too strong late. Obviously, Go Wandji is the one to beat as he shoots for four-straight wins, but we are confident that Aidensfield can get the job done.
Best Value at Doomben – Last Chance
Last Chance has been knocking on the door in his couple of Brisbane runs this time in, running fourth on the Sunshine Coast first-up when jumping out of the ground late, before running second to Contemptuous across the road at Eagle Farm on March 12 over 1200m. The Shaun Dwyer-trained six-year-old gelding went to the Gold Coast at his most recent start and finished down the track over 1400m under a big weight, so he should relish the 3.5kg weight drop he gets on Saturday, getting in with just 52.5kg. He comes back 50m in trip to 1350m and gains the services of Mark Du Plessis, who has ridden two winners from his past 12 rides including last Saturday at Eagle Farm. The 2021 Rockhampton Newmarket winner looks very well weighted and well placed to win his first race at metropolitan level and he should now be peaking fourth-up.
