Ben Melham could be sidelined after a feature race fall at Morphettville on Adelaide Cup day

Shortly after the post in the Morphettville Guineas, third placegetter Set The Sails dislodged jockey Ben Melham, leaving the hoop with a suspected fractured collarbone.

The race was won by Ancient Girl, giving Jamie Kah her fifth winner of the day aboard the even-money favourite, but the spotlight was taken away from her victory as the fallen jockey laid on the track 100m past the winning post.

The second favourite, Set The Sails, put in an awkward sideward step, dislodging Melham, before the loose horse interfered with Water Into Wine, causing Barend Vorster to be thrown from the saddle as well.

Racing.com reported on their live broadcast that Melham was sitting up soon after the fall, while Vorster walked off the track unharmed.

“I just got some words from Matt Santoro re Ben Melham; they think he’s probably got a fractured left collarbone,” James Jordan said.

“Obviously haven’t x-rayed him yet, but the feeling is he’s probably got a fractured left collarbone.

“He’s going to have to go to hospital to sort that out.”

Melham only recently returned to the riding ranks after serving suspension for his involvement in the Mornington Airbnb Lockdown Party.
