Sale Best Bet – Designs
We were with the Anthony & Sam Freedman-trained Designs at Caulfield on January 12, but considering she was three wide with no cover throughout the 2000m event, we are more than happy to forgive her fifth-place finish. Having gone to the front on the home turn, she was always going to be vulnerable late and simply could not hold out her rivals who had the softer run in transit. The four-year-old bay mare out of Vancouver draws barrier one on Sunday, which rules out getting trapped wide throughout over the 1732m. The drop back in distance should not deter her chances, and considering she should gain a suck run in transit, it is hard to see how her rivals get the better of her if she gets favour in the running.
Next Best at Sale – Tranquil Bay
Having broken through for a maiden win at Ararat last time out on January 13, the Anthony & Sam Freedman-trained Tranquil Bay looks ready to go on with the job at Sale. The three-year-old Cable Bay filly took a sit off a genuine speed and when asked for an effort was quick to put her rivals away to record a soft victory in the end. She draws barrier five on Sunday, and with Dean Holland sticking on board, we expect this to be a carbon copy of her maiden success. The likes of Doctor Coto and Rolling Moss will look to make this a genuinely run 1106m affair, which should set it up for Tranquil Bay to finish over the top of them inside the final furlong. The $4.60 on offer with Sportsbet is more than a good enough price for us in the second leg of the quaddie.
Sale Value Bet – Tributo
The Ben & JD Hayes-trained Tributo showed enough on debut at Ararat on January 13 to suggest he was a runner worth following at his next start. He chased home Tranquil Bay and wasn’t beaten all that far, showing plenty of ability when settling outside the leader and then hitting the front inside the final 200m. Despite drawing wide in barrier 14, we expect Jamie Mott to be positive from the wide barrier and have the Capitalist gelding settled in a forward position. He stays at the 1100m, and as long as he does not get trapped wide upon settling, Tributo looks a smart play on Sunday. We are more than happy to take the $13 on offer from Bet365.
