Twin brothers Daryl and Colin Brennan mightn’t have shed any ‘tears’ over their decision to hand outstanding producer Weeping Lass to good friend Gary Peach to breed with but they couldn’t be blamed for wanting to revisit the arrangement.
In her first litter, to Barcia Bale, Weeping Lass threw Crimson Vixen, winner of the G2 Bendigo Cup in 2019 and a three-time country cups placegetter.
Her most recent litter, to Aston Dee Bee, is headlined by Action Girl, winner of seven from eight for Gary Peach.
But it’s by no means all bad news for the Brennans, who are based at Ross Creek, with their lightly-raced talent Mobile Legend, a litter brother to Action Girl, looking to continue the promising start to his career at The Meadows on Saturday night.
“He still needs to learn how to race but in the future, after he’s had 20-odd starts, I think he’s going to be a very handy dog.”
“There were two bitches in Weeping Lass’ litter and Gary asked if he could breed with one of them and unfortunately for us he picked the wrong one!” Darryl Brennan laughed.
“We kept her sister, Pink Martini. She’s just had a litter of 12 to Tommy Shelby.
“The deal with Gary was that we got two pups from each of Weeping Lass’ litters. Aptly, we named our bitch from the Barcia Bale litter Wrong Decision!
“You can’t breed with everything and you just never know how things will turn out. Crimson Vixen and Delta Rhode were the best two in the Barcia Bale litter and they were the last two Gary had left before he sold them to Norm McCullagh.”
WATCH: Exciting young sprinter Mobile Legend (2) made an impressive city debut at The Meadows on November 24, scoring by 7.5L in a smart 30.11sec at just his fifth start.
Mobile Legend has shown great promise in winning three of his six starts, including a smart 30.11sec victory on debut at The Meadows, scoring by 7.5 lengths, while his defeats include minor placings to Group performers Paua Of Oscar and Hamillson.
Mobile Legend will be on trial for a tilt at the heats of the G1 Silver Chief at The Meadows on December 23, the day before he turns two, when he takes on a number of battle-hardened rivals in a Grade 5 heat on Saturday.
Mobile Legend will be conceding age and experience – and plenty of both – to his opposition when he exits Box 8 in Race 11 at 10.13pm
With just half a dozen starts under his belt, the next fewest appearances among his rivals is Dr. Xander with 49, while he’s also tackling Andrea Dailly’s trio; Providence Bale (19 from 79), Gypsy Bun (17 from 80) and La La Missouri (11 from 52).
Mobile Legend may be on a steep learning curve, but TAB has marked him clear favourite at $2.20, ahead of Gypsy Bun at $3.10.
“He’s definitely got ability but he’s still finding his feet,” said Brennan.
“He still needs to learn how to race but in the future, after he’s had 20-odd starts, I think he’s going to be a very handy dog.
“The only thing that concerns me is that he lacks a little bit of early pace.
“I know his splits at Bendigo were pretty handy but he’s had a few trials at Sandown and The Meadows and he’s probably about two lengths off where he needs to be in the first split.”
