The Ballarat Turf Club is scheduled to host a massive 10-race card on Saturday afternoon for Ballarat Cup Day, and HorseBetting’s Victorian horse racing analyst present his best bets and quaddie numbers for the meeting. The track is rated a Soft 6, the rail returns to the true position, and racing is set to get underway at 12:10pm AEDT.
Ballarat Cup Top Tip – Zayydani
Having won the Group 2 Matriarch Stakes on November 6 in impressive fashion, we anticipate the Ben & JD Hayes-trained Zayydani can bring up another Stakes win in the Listed Ballarat Cup on Saturday. Having run home strongly on inferior ground at Flemington, the five-year-old managed to do her best work late over the 2000m, and with a genuine tempo expected over the same trip on Saturday, she should get the race run to her liking. Despite drawing barrier one, we expect to see Luke Nolen have the Savabeel mare settled at the back of the field. With a nice turn of foot and with form behind Floating Artist and Duais this campaign, Zayydani looks to be the one to be with in the 2021 Ballarat Cup.
Ballarat Best Bet – Duchess Of Dorset
We were with Duchess Of Dorset in the final race of the Melbourne Cup Carnival on November 6, but she struggled to get the job done when finishing third behind It’sourtime. She drops back to a BM78 for mares, and if her win two starts back at Bendigo on October 27 is anything to go by, she should take some running down. Linda Meech hops back on board this five-year-old Canford Cliffs mare, and from barrier six, we anticipate Duchess Of Dorset will lead this field up, try to stack them up before the home turn and make this a genuine sprint for the cash. With three wins from five career starts, she is a mare with untapped ability who should prove too speedy for this lot over 1200m.
Next Best at Ballarat – Alcyone
In the opening leg of the quaddie, the James Cummings-trained Alcyone will be looking to build on his win at Flemington on November 6 and bring up consecutive victories for the first time in his career. The four-year-old son of Teofilo has two wins from four starts this campaign and in his defeats has chased home the likes of Mankayan and Mr Brightside. Two of his three wins have come on Soft tracks, so he is sure to appreciate the sting out of the ground, while Damien Oliver retaining the ride can only be a good thing.
Best Value at Ballarat – Sunfall
The Mick Price & Michael Kent Jr-trained Sunfall is set to resume off a 12-week spell and looks well placed to bring up another first-up win. He broke his maiden when first-up last time in and followed that up with a win over the smart Forgot You later in the campaign. With 59kg on his back, it will need to be an elite ride from Craig Newitt, but in the small field of eight, they should not be too far from the speed throughout. The three-year-old son of Zoustar has a nice turn of foot under his bonnet, and if he is at his best, we think he can run a big race at a nice price.
