Best Bet at Gold Coast: Purrfect Deal

Grafton Cup winner Purrfect Deal dropped back to 2000m at Doomben last start off a quick freshen-up and was very good when third to London Banker, who has won four races this preparation. While the Michael Costa-trained mare will have to lug 62kg even after Jaden Lloyd’s 3kg claim, she looks to be the clear class of this field. The daughter of Dundeel won the Grafton Cup Prelude over 2200m with 62kg by 3.5 lengths on her way to winning the main event, so getting back up to 2200m and on to her home track – where she is unbeaten – should be to her liking, even with the big weight. Expect Queensland’s leading apprentice to give this five-year-old mare a good steer from barrier nine.

Next Best at Gold Coast: Morethannumberone

We are big fans of the Costa stable, so much so we are tipping his runners to give him a clean sweep on his home track this weekend. (We like She Can Sing in race one too.) Morethannumberone’s two wins this campaign have been super, especially his most recent at this track on Goldmarket Handicap Day (August 27), winning by two lengths over 1200m. The relatively lightly raced five-year-old now rises to 1400m, which is going to suit the big-striding gelding, and he should now be peaking fourth-up. Only just missing at Doomben two starts ago has worked out well for this son of More Than Ready, as it still makes him eligible for this very winnable Class 3 race. Barrier 13 is the only query, but in both wins this time in he has been covered up out the back and charged through the line with authority, with Andrew Mallyon aboard both times. Morethannumberone can give Costa a treble for the day in the penultimate.

Best Value at Gold Coast: King Klaus

With a name close to Santa Claus, King Klaus continues to be an absolute gift for punters, with the six-year-old chasing his fifth straight win. The Gary Klem-trained gelding continues to be missed by the market at metropolitan level, as is reflected in his healthy $10 odds. The son of Love Conquers All won in tough fashion first-up over 1000m when fending off Le Palmier, who has since run very well when second to Je Suis Belle. King Klaus then went to the Sunshine Coast and once again got into a dogfight, this time with the fast-finishing Boblee, who he meets again here. Back to 900m will suit King Klaus, as he has the ability to get in a speed battle with the likes of Sugar Boom, The Move and Tavisan and come out the other end unscathed. Ron Stewart knows the horse very well, so his services are an added bonus. At the $10 each-way odds, we are very happy to be on this 10-time winner once again.
