Randwick race-by-race preview – Chipping Norton Stakes Day

Royal Randwick will play host to nine races on Saturday, including two Group 1 events in the Chipping Norton Stakes and the Surround Stakes. Rain is predicted for the Harbour City in the lead up, so we will be racing on a Soft 7 track again with the rail in the true position. The first race is set to jump at 1:15pm local time.

Race 1 – TAB HIGHWAY CLASS 2 HANDICAP (1000m)

A field of 16 country horses will do battle at Class 2 level in the opener at Randwick on Saturday. Water Dove (#6) won her first two career starts in good fashion and then was run down late in a similar race last month by Art Cadeau over the 1100m. Dropping back to 1000m should make her and Jason Collett hard to run down from barrier three. Stunning Mosa was a massive hard-luck story last time out at Muswellbrook, so with even luck the four-year-old can surprise.

Race 2 – PRECISE AIR SKYLINE STAKES (1200m)

Despite being a maiden galloper, Sing A Love Song (#4) gets his chance in the Skyline Stakes at the 1200m after finishing third in his two most recent starts behind Remarque and Zethus. There is enough speed here to set it up for Jason Collett to wind up the colt for a breakthrough win at start four.

Race 3 – DRINKWISE SWEET EMBRACE STAKES (1200m)

She’s All Class (#1) comes into this first up after running third in the Magic Millions Classic, where she had to overcome the wide alley. Drawn wide again on Saturday with James McDonald on her, she will get back and should appreciate the moderate tempo. Four Moves Ahead looks the clear danger after being scratched from last week’s Silver Slipper; she maps ideally from barrier five and can stay unbeaten.

Race 4 – QUAYCLEAN LIVERPOOL CITY CUP (1300m)

Criaderas (#10) resumes on Saturday as the Godolphin team target him towards the Doncaster Mile in six weeks’ time. The four-year-old son of Lonhro is unbeaten first up and has only missed the places once when eighth in the $7.5 million Golden Eagle in the spring. With no weight on his back and a soft gate to contend with, Criaderas and Rachel King should get the better of them. Greyworm will be up on the speed in a bid to lead all the way and will take some getting past, as the big grey loves Randwick and goes well second up.

Race 5 – GUY WALTER PROVEN THOROUGHBREDS STAKES (1400m)

We were keen on Sweet Deal (#4) prior to the scratchings of Funstar and Greysful Glamour, and we are even more keen now that those two are out. Drawn in barrier two, she will get it all her own way in front under Nash Rawiller and can maintain her cracking first-up record. She won the Toy Show Quality when fresh last campaign in a spring that culminated with a defining win in The Hunter. Icebath and Tricky Gal sit towards the top of the market as well, and for good reason.

Feature Race Of The Day

Race 6 – TAB CHIPPING NORTON STAKES (1600m)

The trifecta from the Apollo Stakes will match motors again, this time at the mile and in a Group 1. Colette (#7) was too good for Kolding and Verry Elleegant on that occasion, and we see no reason why she can’t get away with it again. Drawn wide in barrier eight, Rachel King will take her forward again and should be able to dictate terms or at least get a cushy run outside Funstar. She loves the wet and is a Group 1 winner at Randwick. Verry Elleegant is the clear danger.

Race 7 – CELLARBRATIONS SURROUND STAKES (1400m)

Never Talk (#7) can return to the winner’s circle on Saturday in what will be her first run at Group 1 level. There is plenty of speed in this race, which will set it up for a backmarker to finish strongly. The Kris Lees-trained filly is a genuine winner and deserves her chance at the highest level after running a narrow second in the Light Fingers Stakes last time out. La Mexicana is another who has an affinity with the winning post, so she will be there for a long time, while Love Sensation represents some value at around $35.

Race 8 – HEINEKEN HANDICAP (2000m)

The stayers get their chance in the penultimate race of the day over 2000m. There are plenty of differing form lines coming into this, so it is a touch difficult to line up, but we think Great House (#10) and James McDonald can go on with the job. The European import has now had two Australian starts, running third at Flemington and then absolutely bolting in at Rosehill at the end of January over 2000m on a Soft 7. The extra fitness in his legs should see him ultra competitive on Saturday as he progresses towards the Sydney Cup.

Race 9 – ACY SECURITIES HANDICAP (1200m)

It is tricky way to round out the program at Randwick on Saturday with a 1200m Benchmark 88. Zakat only got gobbled up late by I’m Telling Ya at Flemington a fortnight ago and returns to a track where he consistently races well. The James Cummings-trained gelding’s three wins have come at the 1200m, and he maps nicely from barrier three under James McDonald. Liberty Sun (#10) is the value, however, after running second to Count De Rupee six weeks ago. He gets no weight on his back with Kathy O’Hara> doing the steering, so he goes on top.
